Dolphins followed me yesterday,
Played with my boat for miles.
Every time they did a flip,
Ya know it made me smile.
Huge animals they were, not just a little fish.
But first:
Wally alone at the helm watching nothing,
Save for the sea and the sky and the instruments, occasionally.
Hearing nothing but the wind and the lapping of the waves against the boat.
Mind totally blank, lost in space, beautiful feeling.
Behind me to my right the dolphin broaches,
Blows and takes a deep breath,
Scared me so bad, ‘bout shit my pants.
They truly are marvelous creatures. Once in Alaska, a huge humpback whale surfaced right next to our boat. One of my all time favorite memories, and I wish I would have jumped on his back for a ride.
Oh, they are wonderful creatures and very friendly too. Used to enjoy being around them, allowing them to guide and lead me through the ocean. Nicely written, enjoyed....
hahaha, can picture the reaction;-) Do you know how fortunate you are, to be out there sailing and seeing such sights? Thanks for sharing and take care you don't have a similar visit from sharks;-)

I saw some dolphins in Mississippi; they are beautiful! Even got to touch one and feed it some fish; that was cool! :) I shall never forget it!

this poem reminded me of the days in the military, pulling into port while a few dolphins "escorting" us, as we used to say. thanks for the reminder. very well done.
Once, crossing from Puerto Rico's San Juan to Recife (Brasil) a school of bottlenose dolphins followed leading the way just an airbreath from the bow for many many hours then they were joined by a tremendous shoal of blue fin tuna that took station on babor and starboard.
That was almost thirty years ago, yet, that picture still are in my mind.
Great poem though.
The unexpected can do that, but then what a blessing you were given! I've heard tell that if you see a dolphin while at sea, you are going to be sooooo lucky ... good on ya! I love dolphins, too. :) Well done.
