I step outside to enjoy the quiet,
Of mountain mid-day,
Not a sound anywhere,
Save the waterfall nearby.

Two deer meandered along their trail,
That goes through my backyard.
Enjoying the sight, I heard a familiar sound.
A squirrel obviously upset at the deer,
Began a'fussin to beat the band.

How do I describe it?
It has two tones and sounds sometimes like a chicken,
Or some other oddly bird.
Strangest thing you ever heard.

I couldn't help myself and began a'fussin back at him,
In a Southern Squirrel dialect.
He stopped, looked at me, then the deer, and went back to fussin.
I gotta hide my Budweiser.
