I noticed a hummingbird the other day
I noticed a hummingbird absent the
blue hues and sunshine
I noticed a hummingbird
but
not the swift zipping hummingbird
that makes sharp geometrical angles
in mid air
not the busy hummingbird
that disappears in the blink of an eye
not the petite hummingbird
that defies aerodynamics
but a hummingbird that
was perched on the
branch of a small tree
I whispered to my mother
not to disturb the hummingbird’s
serenity.
I wish I knew what it was thinking
as it rested its weary wings
Tired hummingbird
It fluttered and darted over
scented roses and tulips
street lights and stop signs
and then made a crash landing
on a leafless branch of a tree.
A tree that stood erect in the middle of a parking lot cluttered with
cars and metal shopping baskets
Did this tiny creation lose its compass as it
dodged puffs of car exhaust
and maneuvered around concrete
parking structures
It sat still as we stood still
for minutes until we had to leave
until we had to get into our cars
and enter the traffic of life
The hummingbird remained
flightless
remained still
remained observing.
