"A New Life with Standing Bear"

The Storm is coming,
The babies are crying,
The elders are urging
for us to take flight.

I know, I have spoken
to the great spirit.
If we don't leave
our tribe will parish.

Slowly, I gather food,
firewood, and blankets.
We must journey, North
and find our warriors.

We must flee,
Not only due to the impending storm,
but the deadly war that is coming.
We must save our tribe.

I have given the women
the message from the Great Spirit,
they have chosen to stay.
I take my family and flee.

Oh, Tomas, please guide us,
on this stormy eve,
help me to find shelter
and know your children will be free.

We leave during the night sky,
guided by the light of the full moon,
I with child, and two little ones.
We travel till dawn.

Weary and tired from the journey,
I come upon a brook overflowing.
I cannot think straight,
How am I going to cross this?

In the distance I see a canoe
Oh my, it's from an enemy tribe.
Fearless, I stand my ground,
and we are rescued by this warrior.

The Great Spirit is with me,
I shall be brave and go without fear.
We awake at sunset,
refreshed and renewed.

I hear my children laughing,
I cannot believe my eyes.
there standing in the circle of play
is my Tomas.

I begin to weep and run to him,
he looks at me blankly,
and does not recognize me.
I feel faint and collapse on the ground.

The next evening,
I am welcomed with my new baby girl.
This warrior, brings her to me.
He tells me his name is "Standing Bear"

I feel safe and hopeful,
I shall settle with this warrior
I will make a clean new start
and bring my healing powers here.
