Returning Home (Karena Series)

As we approached our village,
Red Arrow pointed toward the sky,
There was an eagle flying overhead,
as if to greet us upon our return home.

I took in the beauty of this bird,
and felt a peace surround my heart,
He was telling me to be brave,
and soon Tumas and I will be reunited.

I will have faith, and I will be patient,
for there is no love like the love we shared.
As I look toward the village,
I see Princess Pocahontas holding my child.

I am so grateful to be home,
I thank the Great Spirit for this blessing,
and I jump from my horse,
and run to my children.

There is no other feeling in this world
than to be reunited with your children
after you have spent many moons
away from them.

I look into Pocahontas's eyes,
and find much sadness.
"Princess, what is wrong?"
"Karena, my father is very ill, he asks for you".

I kiss my children and run to the Chief.
He has been ill in the past,
and I feel it is a bout of the same malady.
I shall heal him, as I have before.

I enter his dwelling, and immediately feel
the dark spirit that has entered his body.
"Powhatan, what ails you my chief?"
"Oh Karena, I have been waiting for your return, I have been ill since three moons past".

As I check all his body points,
I find a very hot zone, just above his navel.
You have a fever,
I will return with a potion.

Hurriedly, I put together
herbs and oils that will help the Chief
to burn his fever out.
with this potion, He will recover very quickly.

I  stayed with the Chief all night,
and as the birds began to chirp,
and the sun was rising, his fever broke.
What a glorious day this will be!

Chief Powhatan embraced Karena,
and she cried from utter happiness.
Off she ran to her children,
to be there when they opened their eyes.

She watched as all three stretched
and jumped with glee to see their mother.
They were so very happy at that moment,
but only for that moment.

There was a loud crash,
and gun fire was sounding in the village.
She gathered her children, and dashed out
finding shelter in her secret place.

As she watched the fighting taking place,
She was suddenly sicked at the sight
of Tumas leading the White regime,
against his own people.

"Come children, we must flee,
we are in grave danger if we stay here."
They ran down toward the ravine
only to find a fire beginning to burn out of control.

They turned and ran toward the river,
Karena knew they would be safe
on the other side.
"Oh, Eagle. Guide us toward safety,
show me the way to the other side."

They waded across the river,
and as they made ground,
they collapsed from sheer exhaustion.
Karena looked at the fire and cried.

Why is this happening?
How can Tumas turn against all of his people
I do not understand,
My heart is hurting so deeply.

Spirit of the Elders,
Come to me,
Show me the reason.
for such treason.
