KARENA, EAGLE MEDICINE CHILD

June 7, 1583,

When the full moon rose, the eagle soared and a new baby was born.

Chief White Eagle named his child, Karena, Eagle Medicine Child.

Chief White Eagle’s wife was called Dancing Heart.   He always knew deep in his heart, that she would give birth to his tribe’s next medicine healer. Chief White Eagle carefully arranged for his marriage to Dancing Heart.  The marriage was blessed by the Great Spirit and the Elders of the tribe with hopes that they would produce such a child.

Karena, Eagle Medicine Child, was born from strength, and deep love.  She was a chosen spiritual healer and leader!  She was to bring joy, health, and peace into the world.

Chief White Eagle spoke at the birth of his child, “Nurturing light will shine within this child all the days of her life; may the Great Spirit rule her mind and soul.”

This was the beginning of a new dawn.  Hope and peace for the future was burning brightly.

Chief White Eagle, spoke to the Elders during the morning after Karena’s birth.

He spoke with confidence and wisdom.  He was a powerful influence in the neighboring tribes.  All leaders looked to him for guidance and leadership.  He ruled with peace and good will toward all people. 

Karena, Eagle Medicine Child, was to be their medicine woman when she came of age.  She would be nurtured and groomed by the spiritual leaders.  There was never a moment that Karena was to be left alone.  The Elders feared that she would be captured by enemy tribes to ransom for land and control of their people.

Chief White Eagle spoke lovingly to his wife, Dancing Heart, “Dear wife, I fear for Karena’s safety.  The Great Spirit has spoken to me in my dreams.  The words I hear, make me feel that we must take every opportunity to protect and watch over her.   We must be her eyes and never let Karena out of our sight.  Do you understand, Dancing Heart?”

Yes, my Chief, I understand, I will watch over and protect her all the days of my life.

We must get our sons, River Tender Hearted, Soaring Hawk, and Running Wolf to help us with this.  They are strong warriors and will protect her from harm.

Each year, Karena grew to be tender-hearted and very well liked.  She would walk along the edge of the reservation picking up wounded animals.  They were her first healing acts.  There was a bird that had a broken wing.  Karena sang to this bird and tenderly nursed it back to health.  The day she let the bird fly away was the day that Karena knew the power of healing.  It was uplifting and very powerful to know that she gave freedom and life back to something.  She was beginning to realize her purpose in life.  She wanted to help as many people and creatures of Mother Earth as she could.
