I was eating breakfast watching an elderly couple, and I wrote this poem on a napkin because I was channeling their feelings.

The Silence

by Amber "V" Moonstone

12/12/08

I face the window to the street
You sip your coffee
I see your hands shaking

We are speechless
filled with remorse wondering
where all those years went.

The silence that lives among
our lives penetrates my soul
leaving me speechless.

I live in a world of pain and solitude
Where you can no longer hear my voice
For pain has over taken your existence.

We remain cold and distant
without any hope
or love for our future.

You were once my true love,
now, silence,
has come between us.

We cannot speak of the evil
that has entered our life.
Time has paid a price.

You are soon to be leaving this world,
it is only a matter of a few weeks.
I cannot bear this agony.

The tumor has grown,
it has affected your speech and hearing,
You cry out, but I cannot hear you.

I try to tell you that your
fears and cries
do not go unheard,

They stab my heart
like a well aimed knife,
cutting at my soul each day.

As each day draws you nearer to death,
I stay silent because,
I do not know how to live without you!

The sequel made me check this one out first. Very moving, indeed. It's sad when older folks dread getting old.

So haunting and sad, Amber!
I can relate having faced death and I
feel fortunate to still being here for
my wife, children and grandchildren.
I know I would not know how to live without
any of them.

There are many elements of tragedy in this write. The silent confrontation is heavy with the weight of many years spent together, of love, maybe even hate and the eventuality of death.

I think that this could be explored more into the truth, however raw and unromantic in a longer piece.

Thank you Amber,

Axilea

Hello Amber,

Agonizing silence. You wrote this superbly well...it gnaws my heart inside out. I feel this everyday as I watch my brother slowly yield his life to cancer...and can only hold his hand in silence.

Amber,

This is powerfully penned poignancy: sometimes, the Silence is because there are no words to speak. I have none, either. Beautifully penned compassion.

(((HUGS))) and love, karla.

Amber, sometimes old folk can look into each other's eyes and know what the other is saying, sometimes old forlk silence are full of memories and sorrows.
You channeled someone's at the end, with sorrows taking the overhand, with happy memories buried under few tears.
A fantastic poem!
