A Journey Too Late (Karena Series)

The journey was long and tiring,
each evening Tumas fell into deep sleep,
I was to guard our safety and belongings.
The nights proved even longer than the days.

During the second week of our journey,
Tumas was strong enough to ride longer,
and I was able to sleep a bit more.
I call to my Eagle Spirit guide for strength.

Upon arriving at the outskirts of our village,
The morning sun was just about to rise,
I dismounted my horse to view my home,
Overwhelming feeling of doom fell upon me.

The village looked deserted,
no fires burning,
or horses in the village,
or warriors standing guard.

I looked at Tumas as he looked at me,
We knew, we were too late.
"Tumas, where have our people gone?"
"Karena we must face the worse possibility"

I ran as fast as I could toward my dwelling,
As I stood in the doorway praying and
Asking the Great Spirit to spare my children
My answers were unfounded.

There was not a sign of life anywhere,
The dwellings were stripped bare,
nothing was left behind.
This was a good sign for sure.

At least my people had time to flee,
and with the grace of the eagle,
and the mercy of the Great Spirit
they are all safe.

"Karena, we must go now, toward the east,
The eagle is flying low, he beckons us
we must follow him and get to safe ground,
I feel danger here, now, let's go, now"!

They run as fast as they can,
Mount their horses and gallop
toward the rising sun.
Karena looks back with tears in her eyes.

"Please Eagle Spirit guide, and Great Spirit,
bring us to safe ground,
lend us your wisdom and fortitude,
and allow us to have the opportunity
to share the rest of our lives with our beautiful children. They have waited so
very long for their father to return."
