Glowing Moon Speaks (Karena series)

Karena watched as Glowing Moon pointed to the Eagle
"Eagle Spirit" were her first words.
After four years of silence, her daughter spoke.
She called for Tumas to come quickly.

He knelt down in front of his daughter,
"Glowing Moon, You saw the Eagle Spirit?
he is here to protect and watch over you.
When ever you are scared just call on him."

Glowing Moon began to cry,
She put her arms around her father's neck
"Eagle Spirit", "Eagle Spirit", "Eagle Spirit"
She kept repeating those words. 

Tumas was excited and happy to hear her voice.
He was convinced she would never utter a sound.
All of his prayers to the Great Spirit were answered.
He would teach her all the ways of his ancestors.

One day she will be a medicine woman
just like her mother, Karena.
“Father, why do you look sad?”
“My child, you do know how to speak”

“Yes, I did not want to speak,
so I did not.  I shall tell everyone
the story of the Eagle Spirit. It is a very
happy story for everyone to hear.”

“Glowing Moon, you must tell all of us
your story.  Let us join together around
a fire this evening and you can tell
the story of the Eagle Spirit.” 

That evening the full moon was shining down
on Glowing Moon as she told this story,
“Eagles teach us to be courageous,
and when an Eagle’s feather falls to the ground,
it is a sign that someone did a courageous deed.
One day, a boy was walking alone, traveling
for days toward the big mountains. He was hungry
and very thirsty.  There were many Eagles that he
saw along his way, but there was one that flew
in the sky the whole time he was on his journey.
Just when he thought he would perish from
thirst, this Eagle dropped a feather up ahead of him.
He managed to get to the feather and to his surprise
there was a small stream trickling water from the mountain.
He was saved at the very last moment of his life.
This boy turned out to be the Great Chief Powhatan.
The Eagle Spirit knew his greatness, and kept his vigil
until the boy was brought to safe ground.  Powhatan
has told me this story many times when he held me in
his lap.  I love our Chief.  We must be good to him;
he is a very courageous and loving man.”

Karena picked up her daughter,
“Glowing Moon, you are amazement to all of us,
one day you will be such a visionary for our people.
I am very happy you are speaking such truth”
