This is a great event in our lunar history. The last time there was a full lunar eclipse on Winter Solstice was 1638. It is that fact that has inspired this historical/fiction episode of my Karena Series

Dancing Beneath the Dark Moon (Karena Series)

by Amber "V" Moonstone  12/21/10

Karena was sound asleep,
nestled beneath her bearskin coverlet,
when a loud shreik startled her.
She jumped out of bed and put her cloak on.

As she walked out into the frigid night,
she was greeted by the full moon.
It smiled down upon her
as if welcoming her home.

As she looked around,
she could feel a strange energy,
it was a strong pull toward the sky,
to her wonderment the moon disappeared.

She knew that some Moons did this,
but tonight the sight was different,
the glow of the red moon was there
but not the moon itself.

She began to gather wood to start a fire,
she was compelled to do a fire dance
to conjure up the spirit of Chief Powhatan
and also the spirit of her father.

As the fire grew, she began her ritual,
chanting and calling for the Great Spirit
to guide her on this journey to the land
of the other world.

She closed her eyes and danced around the fire,
as she slightly opened them, she could see
the ghosts of her beloved Chief and father.
they were reaching out to her.

She continued in her trance
offering love and devotion to the
two men that shaped her life.
After her dance was complete, she knelt down.

"Oh Spirit of Powhatan, please bring peace back
to our people, strengthen my healing powers,
allow harmony between animals and humans,
and please keep my Tumas safe from harm".

She was energized by this ritual,
the Moon was quite intense and powerful,
A true Medicine women, renewed spirit,
and enhanced intuition enabled her to see the Moon's light shine down on her once again.

She knew when the men returned from their
hunting party, it would be the beginning
of a long cold winter season,
One that they would never forget.

Chief Powhatan's spirit lives on,
even though he has been gone for over 190 Moons
He is still known as the most powerful Chief
of all Nations.

Karena walked back to her warm bed,
crawled inside and fell quickly to sleep,
This Lunar Eclipse occurred on the Winter Solstice,  December 21, 1638!

To answer Jude's question, It was Karena's Eagle. She has always been guided by this Eagle throughout her entire life.

I shall always be grateful for all my readers, thank you for being a part of this journey with the Karena series.

Peace, love and light,

Amber

I love the relationship this piece has with the Winter solstice and eclipse. Many generations are not fortunate enough to see such an occurence.

Great story, well-told!

Love the way you start: just see her snuggling in. . .then leaping up
with a shriek, throwing on her cloak. Makes us see and feel and hear, like a poem is supposed to.

Keep dancing around your inner fire.

Talking to Ms. Moon? I sure do!
