SAD (dedicated to those who suffer with this disease)

SAD is a type of seasonal depression, usually occurring in the winter, which affects millions of people a year between September and April with the peak occurring in the winter months of December, January, and February. True SAD is a seriously disabling illness, preventing people from functioning normally. In addition, millions of others suffer from a milder version called "subsyndromal SAD" or "winter blues," less disabling but still impairing and uncomfortable.

SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder)

by Amber "V" Moonstone

2/10/11

Listening to the sounds
as I awake,
It's another cold day
too much for me to take.

Steady flow of heat
streams deeply within
keeping mindful strength
for this day to begin.

Where is the sunshine?
hidden behind that cloud,
Voices from the Universe
speaking ever so loud.

"My child it will be warm
just like your big warm heart,
patience is a virtue
spring will soon start."

Gathering all my senses,
I gaze at the panoramic view,
seeing winter sunshine
that just came peeking through.

My mind has cleared
and now I smile with gladness,
Embracing all the beauty
and washing away all the sadness.

Breathes of joy release the pain,
feelings of peace surround my soul,
watching Mother Nature shine,
gives me back control.

I am really a phony. I laugh and smile on the inside but I am crying and wondering why on the inside. I have severe heart disease starting with CAD, the CHF, then I have high cholesterol, bad kidneys, I am weak on my right side from a stroke I had in 2001, and for several other reasons I withdraw into myself a lot. So I know depression in all of its ugly manifestations. Thank you for writing this poem with a positive end, but depression nomatter in what form, is still bad.

May the Lord Jesus bless you, and those whom you love, and be with you always, and at your side constantly. With much love in my heart, joy to the world, peace on earth, & ((((((((((MANY WONDERFUL SISTERLY HUGGGGSSSS)))))))))), your den sister, Barbie

Thank you for the lovely poem and the recognition Amber. From someone who has had very severe SAD, I must tell you that this is the first time that in over twenty years I have not had any severe symptoms! A combination of a light lamp and Vitamin D each day has freed me for the first time in all these years...and I'm ecstatic!!

Many hugs, Diana...

I remember too well those dark grey wet weeks of winter
not a scrap of light or hope, the sky falling on my head..your work brings it all back, Amber, but brings, too, necessary awareness of the condition afflicting so many and brings hope and promise
of brightness and joy of spirit.
Thank You so much for this fine piece.

John

Excellent poem, Amber! Weather and change of seasons can be very difficult, for some. My youngest brother, was really affected by the weather, and moved to Florida from N.J. when he graduated from high school. It was a great move that improved his outlook completely!

When I lived in Vt , the long winters easily became depressing and I could hardly wait for spring to arrive... Thanks for the info about SADS. I did not know this foundation existed....M

Amber, Living in the midwest where winter last until the middle of March is extremely depressing! Too cold to be outside and no sun! The stick trees are barely hanging on! Lights help alot! Keeping the blinds open during the day and being in the light. The good thing is that eventually Spring does come and it feels so good!!! Take care my friend. :)

Keeping as many lights on as possible helps some. It does effect many people and will be happy if I see another Spring.

i used to live in buffalo, ny and know this type of thing all too well. i found that my mood was affected by the weather all the time to the point where i was becoming miserable. so, in december 1989, i moved to LA and amazingly, the depression was gone. i don't think i could ever live in that weather again, stuck inside all day for months, scraping snow and ice off the car, shoveling sidewalks and drive-ways, etc. i was okay with it all when i played ice hockey; but as soon as that ended (due to knee injury), i was like: damn, no need for winter anymore, better get the hell out. anyway, my sister lives in connecticut too and she's pretty much over all the snow you all have received this year. things should be clearing up soon i reckon, almost march and relief is right around the corner....we hope. take care amber!
