Parents always want the best for their children, but sometimes things turn out
differently.

Thank you, Dad, for the love and care
Through those years of life we shared.
Thank you for all the lessons learned,
Those times of discipline rightly earned.
I'm grateful you taught me the love for books,
Your fatherly prodding was all it took
To make me write my first poems at ten
That landed in the school paper then.
In college we had our differences,
For a course in Banking and Finances
Was what you had in mind for me,
But in graphs and numbers I found no beauty.
For you I studied to be an accountant,
But Dad, that job was so redundant.
Sad you were of my predicament,
But you understood my sentiment.
We had our trials so you had to go
To that other land way down below.
And we never got to see each other,
On my wedding your proxy was your brother.
You sent me books and paid my fee
To learn the craft so close to me.
Though we were miles apart you were
Still my Father, my encourager.
Now in our old age you have set free
The heart of the writer that's in me.
We're back to writing fifty years after,
I thank you still, the past don't matter.
I know you love me, to that I attest,
And all your plans were for the best.
For now I'm a manager - and a writer,
A daughter loved by you... you're the best Father.
