Nuffing on My Plate
by CJ Heck

I’m sad I don’t like nuffing
that’s laying on my plate.
Maybe it will go away
if I just sit and wait.

I sure don’t like the liver
and I never, EVER could.
Can I have peanut butter
with grape jelly? That is good!

The smashed potatoes are okay,
the yucky gravy it is NOT.
It’s like having yucky oatmeal
and I hate that stuff a lot.

I almost like the green beans
they’re green just like my frog,
but no one likes dumb broccoli,
not even Hank, my dog.

Uh oh, mommy said we’re having
chocolate pudding for a treat.
Hmmm … maybe if I hold my nose
stuff won’t taste so bad to me.

Thats what I did!! I hate lamb and mint jelly. My mother used t make that once a week, she finally decided it was better to make me a pork chop than waste the money on the lamb, cause i would cut it in tiny pieces and hide it under that awful jelly! oh the memories...lol!

CJ, you've done it again! You're sooooo good. Now, I don't have little ones (didn't know how to make the things), but I've watched my sister almost eat a whole dining chair...out of frustration...when her kids wouldn't eat! A superb write, my friend. Yep, you're really, really good.

God Bless
Love and hugs

I'm still laughing, CJ...what a precious one you've written here. I can remember this so well with my own...they couldn't stand it if foods on their plate touched and have never let me live down serving them something that even today they refuse to eat. Oh and you've made me think of my nephew Jack. I had made some Black bean Soup one day for lunch when he was visiting and I've been "Aunt Bean" ever since! He ate what I was sure would be classified as "Yucky". Think I'll go back for another helping...and remember that I was the pickiest eater of them all!

I love these preschool age kids, as a grandfather now I am getting to truly enjoy watching my own kids try to convince theirs to do things like eat, sleep, go potty etc and I smile as I see them use the same tricks parents have used for generations and think they have just discovered it.

Hey, CJ, I happen to love liver! I am one of a rare breed! LOL I also love broccoli, mashed potatoes (WITH brown gravy, thank you!), and green beans! But I DO hate oatmeal (YARG!), and I hate peanut butter! Just being honest! :) Wonderful, adorable write written by a first class poet! Very well done; brava! :)

(((HUGS))) and much love, your liver-loving Texas friend, Karen Lynn. :D

Now liver and onions, THAT I do NOT like! Give me my liver to me plain! And I'll be happy! :)

Poor lil child!!! Who likes liver? Now when I was young my mother, not the best of cooks except to make daough, used to force on us tomato soup. Must be tomatoes were cheap in those days. Alas they never went away. Maybe that's why I decided to cook myself. At least I'm eating what I like. Great poem. Victor

Takes me back to the semolina and prunes days at primary school. Sit up nice and you got an extra portion - and I did sit up nice for extra prunes! Don't forget the duty free brococoli at the airport, mum. And when we saw the big spoon at the side of the knife, we knew it was going to be Scotch Broth - time to sit up nice again.
Lovely poem. You have the knack of reviving my childhood memories that always put a smile on my face, and in this case, also my appetite.

You've just described almost every child. Funny how, if we notice, children are ripe with fodder for our pen, and as we can see, you are a pretty good noticer.
