Poem Artwork

Broccoli

Pipsy loves popsy
and diddly does, too,
but broccoli gags me.
Does it gag you, too?

It’s icky and yucky,
a green pile I see,
and Mommy keeps saying
it’s so good for me,

not s’posed to be singing,
no more making up rhyme,
pay attention to eating,
or I’ll be here a long time.

But broccoli smells
when it lays on my plate.
It’s the stinkiest stuff,
the only veggie I hate.

I guess I could scoot it,
some here and some there,
then push it some more …
ewww, it might fall on my chair,

with little green piles of it
smushed on the floor!
If they think I ate it
they might give me more!

But (sigh) feathery freckles
and little brown beavers
I just can NOT eat it
and my dog, he won’t either …

I told Mommy and Daddy
I just hate broccoli.
I’ll eat ANYthing else.
Guess what? They gave me peas!

How adorable! Funny though, all my kids love the stuff, but I used to hate it when I was young! In fact my five year old is practically a vegatarian...I offer him meat but all he wants is veggies! Too cute~
I can see this as one of many in a book called CJ's Garden!'
Then we can read the poetry before lunch or dinner and be quaranteed to have leftovers for tomorrow! LOL!
Love and Peace~

Quite reluctantly, I recall, I found out I actually loved broccoli sometime near the age of the beautiful little girl in the picture. My grandmother gently urged me to try a forkful of the admitedly delicious looking broccoli risotto she was eating... and since I've always trusted her good taste, I gave it a try - mmmmmmm, loved it, and love it forever! And love peas, too! I guess it depends on the way these and other vegetables are prepared - there are many recipes that can make them appealing and very tasty, even to "sworn veggie hater" kiddies... if only they'll trust our good taste! LOL!
As for this poem, dear CJ... it's absolutely yummy all over!

Love it CJ, and as the children say...Ewww, not Brocolli! Well, that's what I said when I was child, but now I love the stuff. Both of my kids were the same way, if it was green or looked funny, they didn't want to eat it, and now every Thanksgiving both kids request, yeap you guessed it Brocolli Casserole, and bleive it or not Jozie my four year old granddaughter loves it with cheese better than anything! CJ you have such a talent of taking an ordinary subject and turn it into a wonderful, entertainin, and loving write that warms mommy's and daddy's hearts! Enjoyed this much!
Blessings,
Joyce B.

Cleverly written, CJ! Loved the change of "veggie" at the end. I chuckled 'cause I "hate" PEAS, especially canned ones!

Nice done, if one had put more attention to our own childrens words...
perhaps we have learned a thing or two which we thought we knew.
Bush sr. hate it and become President, if someone love broccoli will become...what?
Emperor seat is vacant.
Thank for sharing your love for children.

For the first time just recently I cooked broccoli right. I use to always over cook it which is easy to do. It turns to mush. And now I like the taste of it. But as a kid I hated it. Just like in the poem.

Must be a universal childhood distaste. No wonder in adulthood that we drown the mundane looking object in cheese sauce. And peas! Exactly, another universally shrugged off veg. Don't forget the prunes too - I remember those at school dinners.

Quirky pen as ever, C.J

Sweetie, I knew this was you when I saw the title! You have a style. This one is so cute. I love broccoli, but I love your poem better. And peas are cool. Hey, as long as it isn't tofu, I'm good! Giggle.

Most kids h a t e broccoli, that means more for me. :) I love the way you capture childhood in truthful, yet fun, verse. Out of the mouths of babes.......well done, CJ!

How fun is this! I love it. This takes me back to a time long, long ago--and I'm talking the 1930s here. An emotional trip. CJ, what Norman Rockwell did with a brush you do with words. Keep 'em comin, dahling.

What a delightful poem this is, CJ! It used to gag me good, and I used to toss my broccoli on the floor, too - and my dog wouldn't eat it either! But for me, brussels sprouts were the very worst - I still have nightmares about those.

Move over Nesbitt and read real Children's Poetry. CJ, you are an everybody's poet. What soul cannot appreciate the wonderful slice of childhood you present here. One can see the grimace of the child and the wry, 'isn't that so' smile of the parent in this poem. Written with a well understood eloquence of those we adore. IMHO

This is such a sweet poem, and truly reflects a young child's dislike of particular foods. Oddly enough, most all children seem to dislike one food or another. When I taugth school, few children ate all on their plates.

The name I have for your poetic writings are, "Precious Poems".
