Mom, why would kids say stuff to hurt me, most especially, when they’re not true ? Don’t they even care about feelings? Can’t they think first, before they hurt you?
She said those that do that are unhappy, they’re very angry deep down inside, but they just don't know how to fix that, so they pick on kids smaller in size.
Mom said life is too short to stay angry. If you let it, angry gets bigger each day! But happy grows faster than angry can, so be happy, it’s better that way!
Mom said just stand up for my feelings, but do it nice, and don’t get all mad. I try, but it sure isn’t easy, being nice when they’ve made me so sad.
This is an excellent teaching poem for both children and grownups. It resonates quite well with dealing with people. There's so much here that I can relate to.
Nicely expressed, CJ. Most of us have deep memories of childhood bullies... I recall saving my younger brothers from a few... All children should have the chance to absorb your sage words herein; and their parents too!

Dear CJ, I know a child very very long ago that was bullied into angry feelings day by day, nobody said to him then
"...don't get angry...", he just confronted his tormentors with a storm of rage which put an end to the bullying.
In those days, mothers weren't so wise, or so open.

Children have no idea how the can hurt others with a side remark or just a simple powerplay. Kids see ugly and it sometimes bothers them for a lifetime.
This is a dear write tht hits home with me when I taught.

Dear CJ, Children can indeed be so cruel...they need all the help they can get. I wrote a novel titled TRAPPED ON PLANET LISKA it deals with bullying, but in an unusual way. In it my girl protagonist, who faces bullying because she speaks with an accent, has a boy's name, looks different,comes face to face with her guardian angel. He says to her, "No more tears, Leslie. Have confidence. Repeat after me; 'I know who I am. The One who made the universe, knows who I am. It doesn't matter what others do, say, or think about me, God loves me.'"
Indeed, bullies are really the ones who are weak, the result of a deeper problem. They mask their weakness by being bullies.
Great poem, CJ! So full of truths.
Well stated and as I read it especailly the last line I couldn't help but think how it would be if applied to the rulers of the world's most powerful countries.

A mom's sage advice. This poem is really precious. The reality of it smacks you in the face.
A man once said to me years ago, 'Don't waste all your energy being angry, use it for being and doing good.' Never forgotten it though sometimes anger butts in, reminding me that it is still lurking there in the background ready to pounce.

One of the damaging things that can happen to a childs innocence and feelings is the cruelity of other children once they reach the school system and sometimes the teachers too. If they are not tuned into the children. This one has a powerful message for those little souls. Thank you for caring and sharing your beauty CJ!!!!!!

How true CJ, kids can be so cruel at times, but then so can adults.

I wish I could have had a poem like this one when my son was a little boy. It's always so hard to know exactly what to say to a child at the moment when its needed most. This is a lovely poem, and your style is so innocent and sweet.

I think one of the things I love most about your poetry CJ, is the lessons to the children are timeless and appropriate for us at all ages. If everyone read and followed the theme of all your poetry, we would live in a 'do unto world' and all be the much better for it. Oh, and I continue to appreciate the way you use the King's english in such an understandable way.

It's not just kids who are doing that to hurt others' feelings as well. Adults do too. Mostly those who do to others are the ones who are not happy with themselves and envy another's happiness.
Both children and adults can benefit from the wonderful message from this poem.
