The Grateful Stone (Children)

Humanity has long believed many symbols to be spiritually sacred. The sideways eight, for example, the symbol for eternity. Another symbol for the eternity of life is the endless knot. Crystals are also symbols and thought to be very powerful for focusing spiritual energies. And who wouldn't recognize the universal symbol for love -- the heart. For a child, a symbol can be anything at all, and sometimes even the smallest thing can be a sign from God and the Universe that they are not alone.

The Grateful Stone

I have a little treasure chest
and only one thing is inside.
It’s a very special treasure
and I found it at low tide.

To me it’s very special.
It's my little grateful stone.
It shows how prayers work.
It’s a sign I’m not alone.

Grampa had a heart attack
while we were at the beach.
He lives so far away,
far away and out of reach.

Mommy had her cell phone
and doctors called her there.
When I saw mommy cry,
I knew I should say a prayer.

I closed my eyes and talked to God.
Please let Grampa be okay.
Don’t let Mommy lose her Dad
'cause we can't go that far away.

When I opened up my eyes
and looked down on the ground,
I saw a shiny little stone,
so smooth and white and round.

I put it in my pocket
and I rubbed it two whole days,
praying Grampa would get better
if only God could find a way.

Then mommy’s cell phone rang.
They said Grandpa could go home.
That's why I have a treasure chest
for my special grateful stone.

This poem is very insightful and touching; some children will become enlightened whether they read the story or someone reads it to them. Thanks for sharing.

Awwwww! Innocence through a child's eyes, sad, yet sweet. Could feel the anxiety, then the calm. Beautiful.

Aw, nothing warms the heart more than the affectionate concern expressed by a young child.
I recall as a youngster when Dad was laid aside with a back injury sustained down the coal mine. I rose early in order to surprise him by lighting the fire - a job he always done. There was ash dust everywhere by the time I finished, but I had a roaring fire going. I stood by my handiwork, smudged faced but proud, as Dad came hobling into the living room. He glanced around at all the dust - couldn't miss it, it was floating in the air - then at the fire. Not one for saying much, he simply nodded his head, a nod of approval. This was my childlike way of helping make his back better.

CJ, your children's poems have a unique way of opening up my nostalgia box - thanks.

I found it appropriate that the first thing the little one in the poem thought of was her mommy. That is you through and through. It is poetry which reveals our soul and yours is that of a thoughtful child and the love of family. Bravo dear lady.

What a delightful and special little poem! It reminded me of the time my dad suffered his first heart attack when I was younger, I prayed to God and bought my dad a little ornament with "Best Dad" written on it to encourage him. The minds of kids eh?! Thankfully, he recovered so my version of the gratitude stone worked too :o)

CJ --- have to repeat Dan --- WOW !!! VERY GOOD!

Oddly enough, in the DVD, "THE SECRET" - one of the presenters tells a story of carrying a "gratitude stone" around in his pocket, which another man from another country (I think Africa, but unsure) - anyway, later, the man writes that his young son is critically ill, and requests a gratitude stone be sent to him. IT IS SENT. Two months later, the man writes that his son has a miraculous recovery - AND - his family has SOLD many such stones now for $10.00 EACH!

COINCIDENCE ??? TOM.

As a little one, I had a pebble, soft, warming in your hand...but that is another story.
This one has the innocent quality of believing, of no wanting so much as to ask if He could find a way.
Alittle smile and two tears for it.
Great
