Tempus fugit (Time flies).

Poem Artwork

Decades

I am nine months

Mama tapes a pink ribbon

To my bald head

Somebody called me a boy.

I am nine.

Will the time ever come

For me to look the way Mama does

In her black tank swimsuit?

I am nineteen.

Mother is antediluvian,

Getting apoplectic over F-bombs.

How else does one inject feeling

Into poetry?

I am twenty-nine,

A mother of two.  My children are perfect,

Beautiful, smart, lively.

Why does Grandma think they need

More discipline and more chores?

I am thirty-nine,

The divorce pierces my heart.

Only Mama lets me cry,

Saying of course I’ll be all right.

I am forty-nine, and my mother is dying,

The child in me wails in need of her.

How can life go on without Mama here?

I mourn, and the pain does not stop.

I am fifty-nine, and the world is awakening,

Books, the lakeside life, grandchildren at play,

Writing is my joy, time compresses

I share this peace with Mama.

This is stunning in all ways, stunning.
Thank you for this. I'm 42 and my mother is indeed at that point where each day is borrowed. I feel this poem so deeply, and I hope you do have all your dreams come true in your 60's, a time to fly high and free.
Many Blessings,
Christine

Ya, but writing sure helps to get you over those humps, doesn't it? And you do it so well. This one reminds me of a couple that I wrote a few years ago. If you're interested, check out my "ALL ABOUT ME." Love what you're doing, keep em coming. Thanks Dick

eileen...i still long to be sitting across from my mom at her kichen table so i could wail out my tragic loss and how sacred i was...'mom listen...MY MOTHER DIED!"...'oh Mom, help me...my mother died'......my daughter went off to colledge...my husband left...i'm so afraid'

i love how you threw it all down in raw and honest words

i think you'll find the 60's to be a freeing time...a time to fly without a net....i have...

This is soooo wonderful. To be able to look back and reflect at life in such a way is what it is all about...
