call me joe
i don't know why
but it seems to ring memory's chimes
on my moon
nothing is new here
i'm at a loss for ways to pass the time
man is gone
and the dawnstar
shines on a cold and empty airless clime

it's been so long since anyone asked
i've forgotten my name, forsaken my past
it's been so long since anyone spoke
my wit and wisdom have gone up in smoke
it's been so long since anyone came
that i've forgotten my name

sing a song
sing it wrongly
can't carry a tune to save my life
can't even rhyme true
no one hears
no one's here to hear
i'm all alone out here on my moon
i am steel
i can't feel blue
so why should i feel like crying?

it's been so long since anyone asked
i've forgotten my name, forsaken my past
it's been so long since anyone spoke
my wit and wisdom have gone up in smoke
it's been so long since anyone came
that i've forgotten my name

space wasn't meant for man
he can't survive out here
space wasn't made for man
symphonies of disrepair and moonlets out of place
space wasn't kind to man
rusted machines and mishandled gear
space wasn't made for man
the sargassos of space remain of the human race

Poem Artwork

...inspired by the Poul Anderson novelette, undeservedly obscure.

Man, I am going to have to start reading what you read. This poem shouts of life understood from a place few rarely find. You've been given a great gift to speak what many have no words to speak and the others don't even who read it won't have they have never even had a name that will last. This is a profoundly awesome poem for our time.
