Poem Artwork

Goodbye Pappy Nye

He stood every single day on his porch dressed in a suit, hat and tie.
That was our oldest & dearest neighbor, good Ole Pappy Nye.
He was always dressed like that and not just on special days.
People stopped in passing to see what Ole Pappy Nye had to say.

He was such a sweet heart with a sense of humor unsurpassed.
He was so fond of my brother and watching them was a true blast.
Pappy would come up with strange names that my brother would have to top.
Everyday they’d come up with a new one, it seems they could never stop.

But one day Gary came home from college and he ran over to see Pappy Nye.
Pappy came out and asked him, “Okay tell me one that will make me cry.”
“Oh Pap, I got some good ones for you, to top them you’re gonna have a stuggle.”
“Here it is Pappy, Pete Shickadenski, Mike Sockanoskie and Old John Wallafugle.”

Pappy’s face turned all colors from his normal white, then red to blue.
His bellows brought all the neighbors outside to hear his laughter too.
He couldn’t stop and he couldn’t breathe. I thought he was going to die.
Then Old Pappy looked at my brother and said, “I couldn’t beat that if I’d try.”

I never forgot that day for I was laughing along with all them there.
So when Pappy died a few years later, I remembered that man in prayer.
As I stood hand and hand with my brother paying our respects at Pappy’s viewing.
I said my loving goodbyes to Ole Pappy and the tears in my eyes were brewing.

My brother bent and whispered in Pappy’s ear, that to this day gives me trouble.
“Goodbye Pappy, I will miss you my friend...Goodbye Ole John Wallafugle.”

I completely lost it then and still to this day, have tears writing about my brother.
For they are together once again in Heaven, trying to outwit each other.

hee, hee...
Maybe I shouldn't laugh, but...as the saying goes...you either have to laugh or cry. I am sure that it brings each of them joy to be able to play that game.
:~)
