When I think of Daddy my heart melts, when I think of my father my heart hurts...

Poem Artwork

You Need Both…

I had dearest father but I loved my daddy more.
My daddy was so gentle & loved me to his core.
I truly respected my Father but he was very firm.
He didn’t tolerate misconduct, he was truly stern.

But when I was upset or fell and skinned up my knee.
It was my daddy I ran to, he was always there for me.
No lectures or condemnation he ever spoke or mentioned.
Just gave me hugs and kisses and his devoted attention.

It was only when I misbehaved that my father came out.
He would always be very stern and not accept my pout.
His punishments were fair but where did my daddy go?
Is he mad at me too, it was something I had to know.

It was my Daddy who helped me love the Father in him.
By showing me you need Fathers when life becomes grim.
It took me years to separate these two different men.
But once I did, I understood, and loved them both again.

For a father keeps you straight so you never slip and fall.
And a daddy’s there to pick you up and help you stand tall.
As a child you need them both, one won’t work without the other.
And I’m sure glad God chose those two along with a loving Mother.

On the other hand... I think I am a Mom, or Mommy, and a mother...My kids don't really appreciate the Mother in me. Last week, one of my kids was even kind enough to tell me I was mean. Sigh...Let's just hope he meant the Mother in me, and not the mom...

This is a poignantly written piece
Bonnie May, that shows the child in you still loves your Daddy and your Father. Those were titles earned, not given. If you hadthem in your life, then you were truly blessed.

I must have been a holy terror when I was quite young, my mom spoiled me rotten, and dad, well he had to be the bad guy, as i guess somebody had too...he and I had a rough life though for the last several years of his life things did change for the better...I still miss him every now and then, I just wish he could have met Rufuz, as its been, and I can't believe it, 20 years since his passing...life goes on & sometimes, but only SOMETIMES, I see my dad in something I do...OMG, I'M TURNING INTO MY FATHER!!! LOL, Ed

I love this Bonnie. My dad wasn't around much while I was growing up so my Mom carried the entire load. Your poem reminds me of the difference between Mommie, Mama, and Mother. Mother was a mighty force to be reckoned with and she always won and was always right. Bless her soul.
Hugs,
Marcia
