Today my pain is like birth of woman child
mighty song of sweat and muscle that sings a traveling song
of pain....that comes to me as a new day
it stretches across my eyes swollen cause I knew this day was near
slowly I wake thinking of fate and the sounds that blooming makes
crisp like the air we breathe
now like then your eyes wide and full energy that can't be explained
and in a distance I hear a traveling song that hums of sweat
muscle and pangs
I am all the pain of springtime bloomings have you seen it?????
Lord the stories in our hands and feet on our backs and shoulders
my mind taking me to fuss fights and serious talks
my ears hear in a distance that traveling song
of sweat muscle and pangs cause your growing Woman
Growing as Eve Mary Mitzi Nefertti Isis Sojourner Betty
Coretta Anita Virginia
Growing as Sable (Venus) Zora Lauryn Nina Oprah Erykah
you are growing with roots that are
worshiped and riddled with scars oh how heavy they are
you are growing with truths that are laid out for you
trying to understand such knowledge
you are growing woman/child graced with God's smile
my heart sings in great agony like our mothers before me
knowing how we left the south riding sweat muscle and pangs
chuck-a-chuck-a-chuck-a-chuck-a north
to dat star trying to get far
~In loving memory of Harriet Tubman~

Reviews of "Growin' Pangs (for my eldest daughter Beverly)"
So many things combined in this excellent write Mitzi. As a mother I can relate to so much you have said. You have given your daughter such a strong message and a lesson in her heritage as well. Beautifully written and enjoyed!
I've finally figured it out who you remind me of in your poetry. Nikki Giovanni. You pack so much into every word that I am left breathless, in awe...thank you for enriching my world with your words. More, more, more!!!
a beautiful, poignant write and a wonderful gift to your daughter...

I agree with Andy that you must get a child interested in history and this month being Black History Month a few of us older children learn too. That was something that George Washington Carver said that he wanted to learn something new each day. Interesting poem.
Escaping the bonds of slavery and the misery it caused can be soul wrenching in retrospect.

Getting a child interested in their history, is a brilliant gift.
Who does not want to know what has gone before?
To write it in song/poetry is the best way of all.
Ain't dat der truth.
Deep very poignant, wisdom filled write.
Mitzi, We always do our best as parents to try and explain, to our children where and how they have been able to become what they are. Do they listen? Well, I believe they do..it just doesn't soak in, until they are old enough to absorb it. I can sit here at 45 years old and remember so vividly the numerous talks that I had with my Mother at 15, but at the time I thought she was just rattling. Oh I'd give anything to hear one of her rattles again.
Excellently penned message here Mitzi..be assured she really does hear you.

Attempting to explain to, and make the children understand what has gone on before them is sometimes a difficult chore. When the back-breaking work has already been done FOR them, they sometimes don't quite grasp the endless sacrifice all "good" parents make for their children. And, in the case of the black sacrifice, the children of each generation have so much more than their respective parents to thank. If they can climb down off their lofty, I-know-it-all perch long enough to do that. LOL
Let this coming of age story of a boy named Bean take you back to a simple time. Set in a small southern town in the 1960's, encircled by a river and gleaming white cotton fields.
