Picture Ming Smith, Girl in Church

Poem Artwork

Boy you can always tell when his birth comes round
Kids running and screaming school is out
momma yells,
“Cee Cee come in from that yard leave them chickens lone
get on in this here kitchen got ta gets that head done”
Women gather in the kitchen spewing the gossip of the days
Cigarettes on table, drinks in hand
Me sitting ashy knees wit my back to the stove
Towel round my neck
Grease on table rolled up tissue too
Naps popping to laughs as Sister talk about
Emma Jean letting that no good Burnadette in to here home
Knowing how her man likes to roam
And Coco got caught by her daddy round back of the house
And he put her out
Vanessa waiting in line wide eyed cause this her first time
Being straighten and curled by momma
Charmine got the iron board blazing with my brothers and daddy white shirts for
Tomorrow
Stockings and bows and uncle joe
Well he out back on the steps
Hollering bout all the racket us women folks are keeping up
(even though I can’t open my mouth lessin I’m spoken to)
Momma done warned us bout keeping out of grown folks business
he got his bottle in hand saying momma and nim wrong
got us going to the church with all that carrying on
Jesus ain’t know white man!
If momma didn’t have to keep the door open
And she say if us children whatin round
She’d break him off a new one
And Big Jesse runs him on off
Like always he scare of Big Jesse reminds him of Madea
Scarf tied down rollers on tight ponytails
Don’t want to admit it to lamont, brian, terrance and nim
But I’m excited to put on shiny new shoes wit new stockings
And a new dress dat daddy brought with his check
(We all got something new)
and celebrate his birth
which I don’t know why
he had to die like that….but I guess when I get older I’ll know

Complete like a novel only with much less words. It's not my culture and does yet sound as if it was. All these things are familiar and if it would say "Eidu'l Adha" or something like this it would be my neighbourhood in Accra (sweet Shukura!). Makes me nostalgic.

Folk live and die in the grace, each a pick from a memory to recall and place in time to recall love. Special words, salvation comes with a price. He paid for us, still family takes us all to the special love
Find that place of salavation, good write, better read...Walt

Fantastic narrative and a refreshing Easter write. Took me back to my girl days. In a way, it reminded me of Jill Scott's "Family Reunion." I love that song. ~~Nordette

He had to die like that. So no more blood sacrifices were needed.
And because of his blood. Our sins are out of Gods sight.
For he died, to take our sins, and defeat the devil once and for all.
By his sacrifice we are saved.

I still wonder why Jesus had to suffer as He did, but now I, as a Christian, understand..Jesus died so we could be free from sin if we called upon His Most Holy Name. Now if that isn't True Love, then what IS?? Powerful write and pic; that pic says it all! BRAVA! Thanks for focusing on the TRUE meaning of Easter: Jesus rising from the dead back to life! :) GLORY! :)

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :)

Very Interesting. Makes sense to me. I am sure it took some thought to write this piece.
I guess we will always wonder though, that is only human.
Happy Easter to you and yours.

Once again you write in the language of your heart and bring us back in time when things were simpler. The images you provoke put us sitting rught there in the kitchen by the old wood stove like one that I grew up beside as well.
Great stuff, truly.

Mitzi,

I'm older now and still don't know why He had to die like that...I mean, I do, He came to take my place...but why would He love me that much? And love me enough to die for me?

A powerful, thought provoking, image rich write--thank you, Happy Easter to you and yours
