My daughter called. If you have a daughter, you know the casual tone is for show. That a million memories compete -- no, more -- to create a kaleidoscope of color that spills and makes a rainbow, then another, and another. Oh, there are clouds here and there. You longed so to be perfect for her. The mother-knows-best you dreamed of being was always rooms away. Upstairs, making hospital corners or in the kitchen, not burning cookies. But the girl turned out perfect, so there. Perfect is as perfect does, I say.

Dear Jean, I certainly can relate to your poem. My little girl is 15, my only daughter. She's full of emotions and we're so different. As different as night and day, but we laugh at that and I wouldn't change a thing about her. I love your poem!
I have twin daughters, 28-years-old and I know the heart tugs and kaleidoscope of which you speak. And yes, mother knows best that one had me chuckling for I knew that feeling too well. My daughter called today brought tears to my eyes. I totally related. EXCELLENT. Thoroughly enjoyed. Liz
I too have a daughter, she is now nearly twenty three, married and in her own home. Yes, I too can relate to the days of their youth, a regular roller coaster ride of emotions, and can still be that way today occasionally. I still call my mom daily, time is short and I think when my grandmother passed away and my mom's mom was gone, I learned all over again how precious our time together really is. A beautiful write filled with emotions and sincerity....enjoyed!

Know so well where you arecoming from with this and yea we all want to be the best parents but I found out if we give love the love will be given back as long as we do our best.
I have two daughters And they are
Great at calling and always careful not
To said the wrong word that may caused me
To worried but so its always casual tone
but a mother always knows when it's a fake tone!
All 5 of my kids turnout great!!

I have a daughter alright...and her tone is never casual....but then neither is mine :) She always gets what she wants, the brat!!!!! So do her two small children. Lovely poem, one I can relate to. Victor

LOVE THIS, dear Phyllis... can so, so relate. I was gonna be Earth Mother... but one failed attempt at strawberry jam and elderflower wine (well, maybe that WAS pushing motherhood a bit...) saw to all that. Our relationship went through role reversal pretty quick, somewhere along the line... soon after breastfeeding, I think... Now THAT was something, ironically and Oh so Ho, Ho!, that I WAS good at! :)) I love the intimate yet minimalist detail you give us of that wonderful mother-daughter relationship that we each perhaps aspire to, but are just grateful in the end that we all survived intact... if not, pretty darn perfect! A most contemporary and yet timeless Ode To Mothers And The Daughters They Are Blessed To Call Their Own. Thank you, Kate xx
