Filming this Dream in Color
The curtain opens: What's this-? The film is almost over. Old silent black and white starring. . .that you tied to those tracks? You start to shiver. Through the 'rain' streaking the screen, you see snow banked. Tinny piano builds to a crescendo as The Villain slinks to a frost-glittering saguaro, ducks behind. Second camera shows . him combing a snow-salted mustache, then peeking to make sure The Victim -- you, beyond mistake -- hasn't wriggled free of the ropes that bind her wrists and ankles. Make my day, his vein-eyed squint and dirt-yellow grin signal. Let. yourself be ground beneath the wheels. Hum in the rails means it's coming. Know what they say about railroad time. Cow-catcher takes the first bite. I can hear your heart hammer from here. Warms the bulge between my legs, heh- heh-heh. Shame your mouth's too dry to scream. Not that anyone would hear. Blink if you think hooves thunder this way. Rescue a fantasy. Ask me dear departed mither. Dizzy? Maybe you'll get lucky and faint, heh-. . .NO!! dammit, NO!! Little Nell, I am NOT!! you hear a voice cry. Sheets, pillow, and covers fly as you throw off the ropes, race to the cactus the snake slithered behind, grab both ends of that stupid comic book mustache and pull!! At the same time, knee the viper where 'e lives. Take that, you sorry sacka puke! Take that!! Shock throws him, then the pain. Suddenly finds himself roped and branded. Thorns dig new holes. Train roars past, then screeches to a halt. Sparks firefly drifts suddenly backlighted by a cloud-shoving sun. The End. For The Villain, that is. . . . . . .Drum roll, please !!. . . . . .
