This is a work of the imagination. Doubt there are many of us who don't relate, but I invented the characters and details. Thank you for all the warm and wonderful support! Pea

Queen Bed--Mattress  Still Under Warranty

Like you to meet my wife.   Don't
believe you've met my husband.
Nice couple.  Think they were
still on their honeymoon. Meant
for each other!  See one, see
the other.

Hasta la vista, ta-ta, au revoir.

Didn't so much blow up as unravel.
So sad  to think of all we put into
trying to knit together a marriage
didn't just look good on the top.
Yarn kept breaking.  Every time
we tried to weave in a loose end,
here came another knot.  No matter
how careful we were, our fumbling
produced lumps where we had been
picturing smooth, mathematical
rows.   Color faded right off.   Only
fool yourselves so long.  Guess
we thought it would be like crochet.
Quick and easy.  Metaphor blurs
with my vision.  Since the split, I find
that I steer clear of the bedroom.  Throw
that neon-striped afghan your mother
made on the recliner, stab at sleep
there.  Kept my coat on at a party
for fear of ending up in the couple's
bedroom.  When a friend asked me
to help bed-shop,  I invented an excuse
a 4-year-old would have seen through.
Before tying the knot, you and I loved to
spoon on that double.  Then we talked
ourselves into a water bed -- how
disappointing was that?  Both sighed
with relief when it sprang a leak.
Last bed, we named Goldilocks'
Choice:   juuuuuuust  riiiiiiiiiiiight.
If only we had been.  Wore ourselves
out attempting to mend with weekend
dates and orgasms real and faked.
Mattress 10, relationship 0.   Now
you share a bed -- king, I am sure --
with some would-be Playmate of the
Month.  Sale on at the mall.  Beds,
electric blankets, comforters.  Note to
self:   About time you thought about
a pet-?
Rescue, maybe?

I myself are a fanatic of king-size ones, big as a Super-Bowl pitch for the play and games with elbow space and hopefully a vibrant experienced cheerleader to lead....but I am digressing, you were saying?

Deep and profound. Unique approach to a problem many can relate to. Imagery wonderful. I love your style of fragments that string together to form such beautiful poetry. Excellent. Liz

your approach in relating this lament many have experienced, was novel -- and quite interesting -- I enjoyed it Phylis - thanks for sharing -- much peace and love-- JMW

I can see why you wrote the disclaimer, but you're right, this poem is about feelings and situations most of us can relate to. Enjoyed the read, Pea. Good to look at your words again.

I love the different twist you applied to the telling of this sad and all to often story of failed relationships...do you think a warranty on love would help?
peace and love, Carole~

I really enjoyed this work. Speaks clearly to our penchant for letting little and big stuff get in the way of what is really important; our relationships. Blessings, J'nia

Pea,
I like how you approach and handle this, the fluent almost offhand style adding pathos to the tragedy of broken threads, failed relationships. This is fine work.

Pea:

This is sad when a marriage fail. Nothing would seem and feel the same. You have spun a wonderful tongue-in-cheek tale. Sad situation, but with a good dose of humour!!! Enjoyed!!!

((((Pea)))),

This one hits right between the eyes for far too many. For being fictional, you make it believeable, honest and R E A L. That's a hallmark of a talented writer: to enable the reader to sink their teeth into a character and make them think, OMG, that's ... ME. Well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Well said I like the way you unwound this from beginning to end and the way you ended it...pets can be a lot less expernsive and a lot easier on the heart.
