Luggage-laden Lives
We enter adulthood carrying more than suitcases now,
more than old arguments and faded disappointments.
We shoulder entire climates of concern,
oceans warming beyond distant horizons,
headlines nesting like restless birds in the mind,
the expectation to become everything we have ever promised,
and everything others insist we should be.
Each day adds another layer,
thin as paper,
yet accumulating like snow on a mountain roof.
Some construct fortresses from reflected selves,
polished identities displayed in endless windows,
while beneath them gather forgotten versions,
unanswered griefs,
failures replayed in private chambers.
Regret follows like a shadow cast by a city skyline,
stretching farther as the light declines.
And pride,
dressed as protection,
becomes an anchor mistaken for armor,
pulling its owner toward depths
they call certainty.
Yet…
There are those who discover release is not surrender.
They step into the wide, unwalled fields of acceptance
and loosen their grip on what history refuses to rewrite.
There they learn not every burden is meant for pilgrimage,
not every sorrow deserves permanent residency.
What once seemed a feather tucked inside a pocket
has become a wet wool blanket carried through years of rain.
And finally they leave it beside the road,
for some weights are not failures to abandon,
but wisdom itself; to carry them farther
would be like dragging a fallen tree up a mountain,
certain only to bring one to their knees.
not every sorrow deserves permanent residency.
What once seemed a feather tucked inside a pocket
has become a wet wool blanket carried through years of rain.
