Much truth in these words. Since I've been in America, this has been a hot topic on the news. It's a difficult problem and not one that is easily solved. You've definitely provided food for thought.

Thought you were talkin about Britain for a mo... it strikes me that the richest are the meanest when it comes to either being generous with their wealth or paying a fair wage for a fair day's work. It is hardly surprising that they have heaped up bounty for themselves. THEY are the criminals who obscure their taxes and complain the longest and the hardest about ill-treatment. And are they smilin?? Usually not. Much good may it do them. And so on and so forth, all the way down the line. Reminds me of the Biblical story of the Unmerciful Servant. This packs a punch and holds us ALL accountable in whatever ways we might wish to apply it... even down to the choices we make in the supermarket... Keen and acute, thank you. Kate xx

I agree with Jude as well, however until we stop electing the rich amoral types who pander to, take money from, and refuse to prosecute their own kind, it's unlikely that we'll see reform any time soon.

I suggest we start the 'cleanup' by tossing that beady eyed, Big Oil toady SOB that currently inhabits the White House to the curb...Never in my life did I dream we'd be spending triple what we were paying 5 years ago for a gallon of gas, although I knew before Dubya left office that he'd have this country thrown into pandemonium. Yesterday's marches were a good example of that. I don't know how he and his cronies sleep at night, unless they are exactly what I said...amoral.

Ok, I'm climbing down off of my Democratic soap box now. Great write Sherry! It certainly inspired alot of opinions!!! Including my little rant! I always love reading your work...

I remember the song well and this poem makes just as strong a statement. I try to stay away from the policies of another country but in this case I truly believe you are right. The rich and the near rich will always find cheap labour sadly. It seems to me that until the government and the people take a stand on the moral issues here, how can they deal with the legal ones.

"A Passive Slavery" said it plainfully, and its closing lines call for JUSTICE.

"If a change can ever happen
And our borders be secure
It is going to be the job of each of us
To become part of the cure"

Most of the day laborers around these parts get 7 or 8 dollars an hour illegal or legal. If we crack down on the people who are hiring these illegals the problem would resolve itself overnight but nobody in the government will do that. It's up to us to demand action from the people we elect to office Republican and Democrat alike and stop playing politics with this highly important issue.

Pretty darn sad, if you ask me. I can understand wanting to better one's life, but to take benefits from American citizens...beyond me. A majority of them do not want to learn English; they have their kids translate. If their want to have the American dream, why are they sending their (OUR) money overseas? To support their families?? Don't understand. You've said it powerfully and eloquently--thank you. The ones hiring illegals are just as bad.

Brava Sherry! You nailed the cause with truth and grace! Somehow we must elect leaders who will do what is best for the people, and change the way things have been done with cronyism and letting things get to this sad state. It isn't a question of racism, either. It's one of disgust with a system that doesn't work and no one wants to fix it.
