' . . . seemed to come alive . . . '

Poem Artwork

In my attic where shadows live

There is a trunk left behind by

my thoughtful ancestors - one

that time forgives . . .

"Who spends this night in

an attic dark?" "A place

where memories are stored

like sleeping hearts . . . "

It's here that they waited

Till I came up and wished them

and their memories awake on this

special night of nights . . .

"We were patiently awaiting for

someone that still believes"

"Here among the ghosts of days

that have since passed . . . "

And there near an old spy glass

Was a trunk from their past

That somehow I had missed before

But now decided to explore . . .

It was filled with old photographs

Many of which were daguerreotypes

which seemed to come alive - there

were even old love letters . . .

These letters that caught my eye

Now in my hands seemed alive

And as each letter was unsealed

A small piece of their past was revealed . . .

For this magic weaved a life long spell

And most of all was remembered well

As I continued to explore their past

Once again that spell was cast . . .

As this special evening's hours left

I reflected on how kind fate had been

And how their memories were cleverly

hidden inside an old trunk . . .

Upon this special night of nights

My ancestor's plan as you can tell

Had worked out for us all rather well

Their memories were a guiding light . . .

oh, I am glad you took your ancestors' legacy as a guiding light, Lance. I've been on the road to the past often during these past years and the old photos bring up a sense of disbelief in me. "They" were so alive: laughing, talking...

Anyway, a poem to treasure and read again!

Gina

Your write brings back memories for me, Lance. These "old things" are often symbols and they certainly are keys that open the doors to the past. Thank you. Love and peace to you,

Regis

I always like to look at old photographs of my mom and dad and always wondered what their lives were how they had fallen in love and how sweet it was. It's just something that I've never even thought of when they were both alive. Now when I look at their old photographs, I found a love so sweet that had really existed.

Wonderful thought-provoking write!!!!!

When I was young, I was fascinated by the old trunk of my
grandmother. Memories dating back to 1898. Amazing how well
preserved to be able to peer into the past.

With Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Gustav, and Ike - so many memories and keepsakes lost.

Thanks for sharing your wonderful "Memories in an Attic Trunk". I enjoyed reading it. For it brought memories of my own ancestors.
