I usually don't say anything before the poem, but a short note: This is the third time I have somehow managed to catch myself afire...rather forboding eh? Oh, by the way...My dad was a fireman..Forestry division Captain. That is where I learned to love the forest and its many creatures, He was always bringing home a deer, rabbit, chipmonk or squirrel for us to raise until it was old enough to return to its natural habitat...

Poem Artwork

The Fire

The fire bloomed like a flower,
Red and golden,
Flaring in yellow petals,
So bright it hurt my eyes…

I was entranced,
Captured,
Spellbound,
Feet frozen,
Mind working,
Heart thinking…

So this is it,
Should I let it burn?

It was strange…
How I felt,
I brushed it away,
Like an annoying fly-

But it fought me,
Trying to climb up my shirt,
And I was…

Captured,
By strange thoughts,
Feet frozen,
Mind working too fast,
Heart thinking…

Should I let it bloom?

There was no pain,
Not then,
Only later,
Seconds really,
When they ran to me,
And tried to smother it,
Pat it out with their hands…

I turned from them,
Ran a little distance,
Still-
Spell bound by its beauty,
By a thought that crept into my heart,
Thinking quickly,
Should I…

Let it burn?

They surrounded me,
Ripped off my shirt,
Covered me with his jacket,
Kept screaming,
“Stand Still!”

But my mind was working,
My heart wondering,
Should I have let it…

Burn?

They kept asking,
“Are you okay?”
But I really felt no pain,
Not then,
Though later,
The blisters formed,
And bloomed like flowers,
In a too early Spring,

Yellow and Red,
My fingers and stomach,
Where they pressed their hands,
Trying to pluck the flower
That bloomed and grew too soon,
In the early Spring of me…

My fingertips red and raw,
I was haunted by that thought,
Tried to write about it,
But I couldn’t type,
Or hold a pen,

All I could do was think,
How beautiful that flower was,
How quickly it turned full bloom,
And just as suddenly,
Died…

He asked me,
The one I loved,
What was I thinking?
But he knew the answer already,
The secret in my dark heart-

So he said instead,
“Why did you live?”

But I couldn’t answer,
Not then,
My lips were scorched,
By that flower’s gentle kiss,
Plucked so harshly by hands,
That claimed to love only me…

And I remained silent,
Until much later,
When I knew he was sleeping,
And thought me safe,

Only then could I answer,
And I traced my fingertips,
Raw and blistered,
Over his soft lips,
And whispered softly,

You.

Truly captivating! An artistic and expressive work that brings the reader into the experience.

I felt the the beauty of the bloom and understood how it can cause such longing, but 'love is as strong as death is' and called you back..

This is an awesome write, Reindeer; powerful, and gripping; so glad I found it.

PS Your father sounds like he was a wonderful, nature loving man. More parents should teach their children to respect our planet, and the creatures living in it with us.

Oh my God, Reindeer, this rendered me speechless. It is both haunting and beautiful. Regarding your relationship to fire, do you
know if there was ever a fire in your family history that might hold
an energetic clue to it continuing to touch you this way?
The painting is mezmerizing, as well. In love and light

Awesome and captivating- bringing back childhood memories is an almost sacred art. As a three-year old I once angrily broke a fever thermometer, because my parents had left me alone. Then I played with the quicksilver droplets. They were wonderful. Franz

SPEECHLESS!...Who? Me?!! I wouldn't know where to start and how to stop with this one, Retta - and what to add beyond all the astonished gasps below!! A veritable cornucopia of beautiful thought and burning strands of emotion woven in this intricate evocative piece. And, for me, the special wonder of this write is how you've managed to convey such a kaleidoscope in such a flowing and yet contained way. I'm sure this poem would be an analyst's dream thesis! I think what speaks to me most is the idea of your father bringing home the vulnerable little creatures for nurture, rescuing them from the flames to release them again - and hence, possibly, the fire being a "refining" thing rather than a destructive force. May be way off beam here - but this sure is a FEAST for thought! Thank you. KB

My goodness, Retta.. it was only after I finished reading that I fully realized that this had utterly and completely transfixed me.. Ch'rie's word "spellbound" is exactly right! I want desperately to find the words that describe how the very writing of this, not merely the story, held me rapt. It was like being in your head and understanding.. there is no shock, no frenzie in the piece.. you've juxtaposed sheer panic with quiet, gentle, thoughtful observation of your own fascination... Instead of feeling crazed by the thought of being on fire, I could feel the curiosity and the focus on that "flower"... Sigh.. I'm keeping this one... this is just damned great poetry, and on so many levels! katy xox.
