Life Prevails


Life prevails,
Despite dwindling hopes,
And abysmal dreams,
We cope with sorrow and broken hearts,
We persevere-
But do not dare to live,
The life we fear…

That path too dreadful,
Too broken and narrow,
For us to follow,
To its bitter end…

Remember the dreams you once had,
The road you so fearlessly tread?
Oh the foolish lives,
We children led,
The dreams we bled,
In our nightly beds!

I remember walking across narrow pipes,
500 feet long,
Trod on by the sure feet of a child-
How could I fall?
I was going to live forever!

I must have driven my parents so wild,
I didn’t fear or know death,
None of it was real…

I climbed fences and trees,
Always seeking the thinner air,
To clear my mind,
Now I climb my mountain,
And sit so still…

What went wrong?
When did I learn to fear the dawn?
And the bright light that made me blind?
What made me so afraid of life?

They told me not to stare at the sun,
So of course I did,
Trying to see his fire,
Stared without blinking,
Until tears rolled down my cheek,

I never saw him,
And learned disbelief,
When he took those I loved,
One by one…

Now my life seems so undone,
I look back and see all I missed!
I should have taken the chance,
Pass or fail,
Who cares?

It’s funny now,
When I think of it,
Sitting here alone,
I was never afraid of death,

It was life that gave me chills.

I think sometimes,
I should have let you love me,
Took a chance,
What was there to lose?

But most of all…
I think now that it’s too late;

I should have dared,
To live.
