It’s a maddening season,
Of desert storms,
And winter blizzards,
All falling one day after the other,
With floods to wash away the years,
Not to mention the tears…
He is a God gone mad;
Frothing with rage,
Thinking there is no one this time,
He can send to save,
These ungrateful children from the grave-
The children scream,
But do not know his name,
And call to their mothers instead-
He roars and tornados rip the air,
And plunges his heart into deep despair-
And God himself realizes;
Life is not fair…
And fathers sit on the broken couch,
Clicking the remote,
Struggling to change the channel,
But like bad news,
God is everywhere-
So they take another long draught
From their beer and think they will wait him out.
Patience a trait they know he does not possess.
While mothers weep and wring their hands,
Struggle in vain to understand,
Why the world is so insane,
Shaking her head sadly,
All she wanted was a gentle hand,
And a safe haven for her children…
But Men never understand.
Play by my rules,
Or I will cast you out-
Believe what I say is true ,
Do as I say not as I do…
And Eve that sly bitch,
Turns the apple another way,
To hide the worm inside,
And offers it shyly to her brutish mate…
a great expressive piece to ponder over Reatta. and I pondered while reading it. Then when I finished I thought of the next joyous second I have to just breath and all the small blessings I use to overlook. In truth and actuality we're lucky to still be alive and healthy. And one day this will end. I'm counting every second of joy I can until. Then I pray and thank the creator for just being able to get a break before the quake. l&p G
Excellently conceived and written, Retta, as always. Whatever your material, you always transcend it with your unique metaphors and imagery and with gems of personal insight and perspective. Such passion here and the frustration and sense of hope/helplessness tangible. Testimony to a world which has lost the plot - if it ever had a hold of it in the first place?! This is just brilliant. Passion certainly makes your pen fly! TY Kate xx

The ambivalence of the life struggle is well expressed in this poem, Rein!
It truly very often seems that we don't - and you would think after all this time, we would.
But unlike some of the other reviewers here, I see this poem as an indictment of all of mankind - men, women, and children.

"Keeping with the mood of the day," Eileen? Anyway. Thanks you for yet one more man-bashing poem. Us guys seem to write lovingly, worshipful stuff to, and about, the female variety, most of them at any rate. But maybe Eileen is more right than I thought, men-bashing has been good sport for sdome time now.
Well said, Retta!
The question to be pondered is what drives some men to become brutish--and I am tired of hearing that frayed line about childhood linkages/blaming the mother, etc.
Good write.
'Better Without You'is a compelling narrative that explores the complexities of an affair, hidden secrets, and abuse. It also highlights a daughter's heartfelt journey as she cares for her mother who is battling dementia.
The deep-dive literary meditations presented as stories, poems, and essays in The American Poet Who Went Home Again, A Mosaic of My Soul at Work, have captivated and inspired readers ever since its first paperback publication in 2008.
Very profound; resoundingly good; clever imagery - a grand write!!
