Looking Beyond Tomorrow
What lays ahead this long dusty road?
The Indian in me says;
Stop thinking with your head,
Let your heart show you the way-
But my heart has been led astray,
And I am no longer so brave!
Now I live day by day,
Struggle to rise and find a reason to stay.
I move like a shadow in my forest,
Content to spend the time with my friends here,
The daily walks in the morning mist,
Falling on my face with a gentle kiss…
Soft and quiet beauty surrounds me,
This is the only place that gives me peace!
Here the trees don’t lie!
Don’t say they love you,
Then say good-bye!
I trail my hands in fields of wild mustard and sage,
Savoring the scent of yesterday when,
I loved and was held in someone’s arms,
Fell like a stone for their charms!
Ah, how love can be a cruel thing,
You savor the sweetness that it brings,
Hoping it will last forever,
When it fails your heart screams out never!
I will never love or trust again,
Life is too hard to live without love,
I just want it to end!
I sit on these cliffs looking above,
Wondering how the sky can still be so damn blue,
Why does the earth continue to turn?
When all I can think of is you,
What is there left to do?
Each beat of my heart,
Is but an echo of eternity,
A solemn drum that plays in my head,
Whispering softly;” Play dead…”
Stay here where life is beautiful and true ,
Don’t let them touch you!”
Yet, at times I am drawn out,
Venture to the edge where I can see,
Those who once sought love like me…
My ancestors walked these lands so long ago,
Amid gentle brooks that sing and flow,
They found a good life here,
Lived and loved without fear…
I follow them now,
Looking beyond tomorrow,
Hoping that one day,
They can show me,
The way to set my heart free…
An engaging write, Retta. You've captured the essence of bittersweetness, Poetess. Very well done.
Peace,

This is such a sad poem yet inspiring to go on. What is it that keeps us moving, when humans hurt so deep. "Trees don't lie Don’t say they love you, Then say good-bye!" This really touches the heart. Gorgeous poem! It just flows from your heart! Gorgeous!

Reindeer, each visit to your remarkable Den is such an experience and treat, yet sometimes I can easily become overwhelmed by the beautiful gift of creation that you possess. This striking piece reminds me of all the frailties that a human being possesses, which unfortunately far too many do not or cannot understand the importance of honesty. An outstanding well-penned composition, and I do thank you for sharing your work. Take good care and be well.
wish you luck on that free heart Reatta. The brain rules the heart, tell it you want to be free and act it out, no matter how balony, sometimes reality follows phony. Great poeming, truly
The eternity of place--the peace. Relationships are but dust when compared to the resilency of nature.
So enjoyed the Indian Summer of my beloved northwoods Wisconsin. With his collar, Dad is up, breathing on his own, talking, and exercising. His sores are healing, and, with time, he may do more than hang on again.
Looking forward for the healing in the now often does, indeed, involve looking back. Being rooted and grounded in the who we are, have been, will be is so important when life treats us sometimes harshly and as dispensible. The constancy of nature can help in this healing, too. Your usual high standards of lyricism and sensitivity, as well as beauty in your subject and tone. Excellent as always! TY Kate xx
This poem groes in meaning each time I read it. It gets richer by the minute. I think if we look deeply into our hearts, we'll find out we already know these things, yet we still wait for a sign of ancient wisdome.
This one is so well-written. You've met the challenge and beyond that.

love is never cruel...god is love...human insistence upon moderating love, qualifying love, adding conditions to lvoe, creates cruelty...your work is always so visual, so graphically pleasing, that even when the topic is sad, the journey itself is a visceral reawakening of the senses...
This is beautifully sad, Reindeer. Love is a gift that we give to ourself, we don't get it from anyone else. Sometimes we make poor choices when we decide which ones we will feed ourselves from and when they don't share the feelings we have and we feel lost and perhaps alone. The truth is that we can create those feelings of love within ourselves anytime we wish, with or without a partner; we just have to believe in love and give it to ourself. This is a really nice poem and a fantastic response to the challenge. I love the feeling in this line:
"I trail my hands in fields of wild mustard and sage"
It echos freedom of the spirit and reminds us that this path is for us to walk and we must savor the beauty to be found in each day. Excellent poem!!
Take care,
Sherry
The graphic grabbed my attention but the words of this write so pure and full of passion of the love of life and the combination of your ancestors leading you into the future was amazing. I can see how this was so well recieved.
This is absolutely beautiful. One of your best, and you, my friend, are one hell of an excellent poet. BRAVA!

What a fantastic response.. Great Indian friends from Dakota were so gentle and forgiving but I sure learnt a lot of their history... General George Armstrong Custer. LOLOL
Man did I see and learn heaps. Of which is not taught in secular schools last I heard.. Or Hollywoodised. The truth is mainly still on the ground.. The real savages were not the Indians..
Each beat of my heart,
Is but an echo of eternity,
A solemn drum that plays in my head,
Whispering softly;” Play dead…”
these lines and the entire poem resonated so much with me, Reindeer. though I don't share your native heritage, I have asked these questions and felt torn between opting out and surging forward. Dawn

When this kind of loneliness finds you it is like a silent scream. You want to strike out to those who have made you hurt. It seems that nature is the calming spirit in this set of very well-written words.
Just as life during the pandemic was color-coded with different hues representing different levels of danger, life in its aftermath has become shaded in similar ways. As a self-styled “Seeker of Beauty with Beauty,” (borrowing from a quote by W.E.B.
