My Stone Cave
Always asking,
Where I go,
Don’t think you really
Want to know…
Down so deep inside,
A secret place,
I found to hide…
When I was a child,
I found a rock cave,
Hidden in the giant slabs,
Thrown by an angry God,
It is safe,
And dark,
So deep within the earth,
And no one,
Could touch me there,
No more pain,
No more screaming,
To drive me insane…
A slender crack,
Slid right through,
Not big enough for you-
Only a child could do,
The things I had to-
Brought a blanket,
My books and pens,
Wrote by candle light,
Until the night closed in…
Safe, and dark,
And alone…
I stayed there when I could,
Longer than perhaps I should,
Made it my home,
Loved being alone,
Huge shoulders of God,
Wrapped around me,
Felt so good…
Then one day,
I didn’t fit anymore…
Could no longer slide in the door
Of my hidden place…
For years I returned,
And sat on the heavy stone,
Wishing I were thin enough
Just one more time,
Wouldn’t matter if I couldn’t get out,
That wasn’t what this was about…
So I found a new way in,
I took the cave out,
And put it in me,
Now you see,
Where I go,
Over the meadow,
And through the mountain,
To the stone cave of my heart…
And God’s strong shoulders,
Still keeps the others out…
Safe and dark and alone,
In my cave of stone,
You wanted me to show,
Where I go,
When I need to be alone,
Do you feel better now,
That you know?
