The city screamed tonight,
Waking me from my uneasy sleep,
Steel wheels on iron rails,
Screeching in such an eerie way,
The howling of that lonely sound,
Sounding like a wounded growl…
I woke and listened to the dark roads groan,
Under the heavy weight of a million lost souls,
Traveling too fast on unknown paths,
And watched as the earth gave way at last…
The stone walls and steel fences,
Meant to mend,
But what are they caging in?
To what end?
I listen to the city cry,
And wondered if this was why,
So many walk in deep despair,
A million people but none of them care…
Hate and madness so intertwined,
Served on gold lined platters to all mankind,
Children with eyes that glitter,
Invisible electrons their baby-sitter…
Where are the flowers and trees?
In walled and gated gardens,
That nobody sees…
Where are the animals and birds in the trees?
Caged and chained in silver filigrees,
I don’t even hear the wind here-
Where is the breeze?
So empty and desolate,
This city is too dead for me,
Back to my mountain I flee,
Where everything there is free!
My god,
How soul killing is your world there!
No wonder you do not dare to live,
There is nothing you can give,
Nothing to see but stone and steel,
All dead!
And in the night,
The city moans,
I hear it groan,
Under the weight,
Of a million dead souls!
Each separate-
Each alone-
Don’t you know,
Each gentle leaf is a part of me?
A part of you,
Making us we?
spooky and chilling write; glad i live in a little city, and not a big one like dallas or fort worth! YIKES! (((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in texas, karen lynn. :0
Retta, this is excellent, written with an ear trained to a different life. I agree with some that there can be life in the city. I have a daughter who finds it there, would not be happy without her organized chaos. But I, a country boy at heart, have tried it and found it terribly wanting, just as you do. I guess its different strokes for different folks. As with you, I love the mountains.
Best regards,
Leland

I agree packs punch...some fantastic images...Damn fine write. I hate the city....I live an hour from it...I can't wait to get home after a day up there. Ty, Dani
so sad can the city be, but if you look alittle deeper there is even life in steel.. it can be warmed by just a human touch... we need to reach out to others more... this is a great write
