Final Judgment

How will you judge me?
When I arrive on your doorstep,
At the journey's end,
When the wine will taste like stale blood,
And the bread in your mouth,
Like burnt ashes...
What name will you give me then?
Sister, wife, mother,
To your still born children;
Too frightened of life to live,
And thus choose sweet, silent death…

That sweet darkness,
Which clasps them to this mother’s dry breast?
Now aged and wrinkled with time-
Do you hear them wailing in the dead of night?
Crying to be fed this barren mother's milk-
How do I comfort them?
Shall I tease them with the light of life?
Casting shadows on the wall,
Making demon shapes,
That will chill their souls into silence?

Come then,
Judge me fair and equal-
Tell me how many sins I committed,
In the darkness of my life-
When the entire world,
Lay sleeping and uncaring,
In their pretty, warm beds…

Come stand before me,
And cast your stones,
See if you can strike me down,
Perhaps break a bone...
Ha!
I laugh at you-
And your weak pathetic excuse at life,
And your lies comfort only you!
I do not believe them,
Laugh at your whispered prayers,
Knowing love and truth to be a lie…

Fairy tales whispered in your ear,
By your mother who so wanted to believe,
In the White Knight,
Who would come one day,
And save her,
From her torment…

These same lies,
You now bear in your heart,
Those empty and shallow words,
Are dead even to you,
As dead as this shell,
That once bore my name-
As dead even as me;

This pale ghost,
Who stands before you,
And mocks your pain,
And sweet sorrow,
That fills your life,
Laughing at the shadows you fear,
Even as I reach out and taste the tear,
As it leaves its red trail on your cheek…

How sweet!
How lovely this despair tastes!
How deeply your sorry life,
Gives me strength to face you now!

Stand before me
And condemn me to hell,
If you can,
If you find the courage to say,
I am not like you in any way!

Judge me,
And find to your dismay,
How much we are alike,
In life,
In love,
In death.

In the final judgment,
Weigh my sins,
And see how far the scales slide,
Look into my eyes,
And know the truth at last,
It was always you,
Who believed that lie,
Never me,
Never me.

Some absolutely astounding imagery. Intensely gripping. I think Vincent Price, Bela Lugosi, and Hitchcock would all be VERY proud (and a bit jealous). I really became wrapped up in this and, after all, isn't that what writing and poetry are supposed to accomplish?
