They Killed My Friend

I had a friend,
Who wrote the most beautiful songs,
She touched the heart,
Of all who heard her sing,

But something was wrong…

They came,
And took her away,
Said she was ill,
Said she was insane…

They gave her pills,
And now,
She doesn’t sing anymore,
Now she just stares at the floor…

And I wonder…

If maybe they were deaf,
If maybe they were blind,
Who are they to tell her,
She was wrong?

I had a friend,
Who was lovely and so beautiful,
Who sang about her life,
But the wrong person listened,

And they killed her-
She is dead now,
As silent as the grave…

The forest is empty-

I don’t hear her music anymore,
I don’t see her,
When I look into her eyes,
I had to look away,
Someone else took her place…

I wonder now,
If she is still there,
Hiding inside,
Safe and whole…

I hope so,
I miss my friend,
I miss her songs,
I miss her…

Reindeer, what a painful, raging write about the loss of a dear friend to the plague of narcotics that infests this society! Death as a growth-industry, chemically-induced escapism and artificial solice resulting in oblivion... so very, very sorry to see it touched your life! Brillianltly expressed!

how much i relate to 'all' the pain within this, Retta...so hard to explain, but, as always you have moved me so...
ah, feel a bit like that friend, but it would be myself who took me away...still, see the other side, also...Retta, this is more than moving and so beautifully written ...you have such a human kind and honest heart and you also have such a special Gift and oh I am Thankful... sharing this and so much more...
love and peace and many thanks,

Love your winning poem/artwork but this one I empathize with. One can die inside without losing life; that's the most tragic death of all. Thanks for sharing this with us and congradulations :)!

This poem saddens me because I've been where your friend is, but I came out of it. For over a year, I had no words, I had no life, I just had existance but I grew and I learned again to live. Here is hoping the same thing happens to her....

(((reindeer)))

bitterness and sadness resonate through this descriptive, intensely felt poem...and i can see why

they kill the soul, but leave the body--a mere shell *tears*

i'm sorry for your loss--if you need anything, let me know

(((((HUGS))))) and love,

karla. :(

I agree with George's comments. I lately find that people judge another too quickly and too easily, without really get to know the person first. This is so sad.

Damned drugs anyway. This is so sad. You do this so well... exquisite darkness on a difficult subject. Dale clark had one that reminded me of this. You've left quite an imprint on me here. Excellent work....subjects like this need to be addressed more often.

Thank You,
