When I Was a Baby Doll by Gloria Buono-Daly © 2025
[Intro]
Hmmmmm
Bop da da da da, bop da da da da, bop da da da da, doo-wop
Hmmmm
Bop be bop, daa daa daa daa, daa daa
Hmmmm
bop be bop, daa daa daa daa, daa daa
Bop, daa daa daa daa
[Verse 1]
Oh, those music memories
Of song and dance, so free
To sing, to move, to simply be
It’s so plain to see, full of glee
My music, my word, my voice
Every note, every step, my heart,
All the while right from the start..
[Chorus 1]
I should have known
Words Paul Insetta wrote
Every note, every step, every word I’d emote
From rehearsal rooms to forty-five’s first play..
[Verse 2]
Lessons in the Bronx, through rain or shine
Rosie’s Baby Dolls, that group was mine, all mine
And with my sister and brother, so together
In harmony like birds of a feather
Family, friends, a full house of sound
Dozens of kids, family all around
My dad bought our song at the record store
Mom sang along, couldn’t ask for more
Echoes of childhood still heard
Doo-wop memories, she-bop, my.... she-bop, my word...
[Chorus 2]
I should have known
Words Paul Insetta wrote
Every note, every step, every word I’d emote
From rehearsal rooms to the record’s first play…
[Bridge]
Oh, music and words, my heart, my part
Every doo-wop, every start
Not about the fame, though it calls my name
When I was a Baby Doll doo-wop singer,
When I was a Baby Doll doo-wop singer, still part of me—(doo-wop, she-bop)
Still part of me—(doo-wop, she-bop), still part of me—(doo-wop, she-bop)
[Outro]
Oh, take me back to our Bronx days
Where music, song, and doo-wop ways
When I was a Baby Doll doo-wop singer
When I was a Baby Doll doo-wop singer, still part of me—(doo-wop, she-bop)
Oh those music memories
Of song and dance so free
When I was a Baby Doll doo-wop singer, still part of me—(doo-wop, she-bop)
[fade out]
Ohhh...
When I was a Baby Doll doo-wop singer, still part of me—(doo-wop, she-bop)
Still part of me—(doo-wop, she-bop)
Still part of me—(doo-wop, she-bop,) (doo-wop, she-bop),
Still part of me
[end of song]
My girlfriend had a song and dance group here in Houston. I don't know why young people don't pick up on that wonderful happy music anymore. It was so much fun to sing and do.
Thanks for taking me back to my sock-hop days.
