First, I wrote an article about what it’s like working with a narcissist, and then my thoughts somehow wandered back to the ancient Greek myth of Narcissus—the beautiful young man, about 17 years old, who became so captivated by his own reflection that he fell in love with himself. Somehow, that whole story turned into this little dance song. It also brought back a childhood memory of watching The Patty Duke Show. I remember an episode about friendship where one friend becomes popular and admired, and in the process begins to ignore the friend who had always been there and had done so much for her. The lesson was essentially that when someone becomes too caught up in themselves, they can lose sight of the people who truly cared about them. And, of course, the connection was Narcissus—he sees his own reflection and falls in love with himself!

Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Maybe let's keep looking. [VERSE1] Way back when, before the selfie, Before the camera, before the “like,” There was a boy— A bundle of boy— Who caught his reflection One day in the light. He leaned in closer, He couldn't resist, Fell for a stranger— Then saw it was him. [PRE-CHORUS1] One little glance, Then two, then three— And suddenly— Who needs anybody But me? [CHORUS1] ME, NARCISSUS! Look at me! LOOK AT ME! Everything is— ME! ME, Narcissus! Can't you see? The most important person In the world— IS ME! Take the credit, Take unearned praise, Turn every little question Into personal rage. ME, NARCISSUS! Look at me! LOOK AT ME! [VERSE2] Then came Ovid With a story to tell— Of a beautiful boy, A bundle of boy, Who loved himself well. Centuries passed, But the story survived. The pool disappeared— But the mirror stayed alive. The language changed, The meaning grew— And suddenly Narcissus Was something we knew. [PRE-CHORUS2] What started with a reflection Became something more. Every conversation— ME! Every spotlight— ME! Every story— MY STORY! Every room— MY FACE! TAKE THE CREDIT! Take unearned praise! SHIFT THE BLAME! Feed the rage! LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME! Me… Me… Me… Better.
