On a Day of Thanks
In keeping with the spirit of this day, I am thankful for…
--memories of phone calls from relatives and friends from
the distant past who, like me, are too forgetful to call or
to remember who to call.
--mashed potatoes (or potatos?). I forget. One day
I will call Dan Quayle to get the spelling right.
--my minivan. She coughs, she sputters, she lunges
but she always manages to get me there and bring me
back-- more or less intact.
--the Complete works of Shakespeare. Faithful companions
on my bookshelf always reminding me of my language
inadequacies. Someday, per chance, I may’st read them.
--tequila. Olé!
--alligators. They swim in my backyard and provide me with
an endless flow of moving targets upon whom to hone my
marksmanship skills. BBs, of course.
--duct tape. It holds my world together. The inventor was
underpaid.
--all of Fred Astaire’s dancing partners: Ginger, Rita, Cyd,
Leslie, Judy, Eleanor, Joan, Paulette, Virginia, Marjorie,
Lucille, Ann, Vera, Betty, Olga, Jane, Sarah, Janis,
Audrey, Petula, Barrie. Whew! Talk about stamina.
--rainy days. They clean the air, wash away cares, and
rejuvenate the soul. They are one of life’s best
bargains.
--touch. Nothing says hello, goodbye, or “I’m ready”
like a long, wet kiss.
--laughter. It ranks right up there with rainy days.
--pets. Loyalty and love whether deserved or not.
-- trickery. I once tricked Shirley Jones into saying
she loved me. It’s a long story.
--nude wrestling. It’s when your partner is free to
inform you of what really turns him or her on.
Take notes.
--sunsets. The day ends, the night begins. Either
way, you win.
--music. It is the food of life. Play on.
