Knowledge understanding beliefs
They inform encourage and persuade
But do they tap into the depths of life
And reveal the unvarnished Truth?
We can only know that when we are
Satisfied we stop the search
And when inquiry ends
The pursuit ends
And we languish in a sea
Of half truths;
Our minds dull
Our senses overlap
Our appetite recedes
And our journey ends;
How smug can we be
To think that we stand now among
Answers good for all time?
Is murder the truth?
How about hatred?
Enslavement?
The list goes on
And like the journey
It leaves a bitter taste;
We long for a time and place
Where tolerance caring understanding
And forgiveness illuminate our paths
And the ultimate revelation is
Enlightenment;
Will we know it when
We see it?
Feel it?
Taste it?
Smell it?
Touch it?
Or are we asking
All the wrong questions?
Your poem raises a lot of eternal questions. We would certainly like to rise above our reptile beginnings, but those instincts are strong and not easily overcome by our large forebrains. Maybe if we evolve enough before it is too late.
As Buddha says: one cannot love if one does not understand love. Perhaps, just as you proffer here, the idea of understanding, the effort to vet claims, utterances, ideas, to fact check as far as possible--both in the scholastic vein of studying that which contributes to a healthy intellectual life, as well as applying these means of corroboration to the needs of a healthy relationship with mate and fellow worker--one can get closer to understanding. The daunting part of such a quest is that far too many people avoid the task, opting instead for the "drive-by" abbreviation to learning, perfectly satisfied with the "fast-food" style of ingestion, ignorant of the long term effects of such shallow preferences. Your words are needed. Hopefully, many will read them.
