Unrequited is such a benign term
Much like a hanging chad
It just is and nobody cares
Except perhaps the chad;
But love is personal and it
Is directed at the object of
Your own self esteem
Your ideal
the core of what is
and what can be;
You did not take the leap
Recklessly but
With confidence
Knowing the connection
That could be
Felt so perfect now;
Alas, in a troubled world
Where the “me” melds
Too easily into confusion
The “us” loses its start
And the “ego” is stripped
Of its character and
Is left to dangle
Like that hanging chad.
What is so often said to me is that "it is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all." I suppose that's as true as it goes, but what of those of us who have loved without receiving? I think for us the loss is much worse, for we have received nothing for the giving of our hearts. No warmth, no magic, no promise, no real reward. Just the loss of our hearts and a piece of our soul. No, I submit that unrequited love is the harshest love of all.
Is the picture one of Chad hanging himself over a love he gave but never received in return much like the chads on a voting ballot that are punched but are never counted? Poor Chad!
That's quite an image and the analogy of the hanging chad is pertinent in the extreme over the next week. The loss of love that was sent out and never given back is almost worse than death. I have experienced it and it feels like your guts have been ripped out and the rejection is more than you can bear. Good topic.
