The Sound of Silence

Evil stalks the land.
It leaves a trail of devastation in lost dreams
It shuns music poetry and mystery
It smothers expectations;
When any form of human activity approaches
It saps the energy from the source and quiets the commotion;
It knows neither comedy nor tragedy
Mood nor similitude
It lacks warmth and understanding
Courage and curiosity;
It has no interest in comfort or joy
Laughter or sorrow;
Your tears cannot dampen its arid soul
It cannot hear your shouts;
It swamps life with nothing in general
And less in particular;
It creeps in stealth;
It is the great destroyer of form and substance;
It stills the raging storm;
It has no past
No present
No future;
It is the antithesis of all that is
All that was
And all that ever will be;
Yet it mocks
And boasts
And dares you to defeat it;
It is the cold emptiness
That fills the void where
Once there was love—
It is the ultimate enemy of
Existence;
It is what you feel
When hope is gone;
It is the arrogance
Of Silence.

This poem reeks of despair. I think many, if not most, of us have felt this way at one time or another. Excellent mood expression and imagery.

Your rendition of what silence sounds like resounds loudly in the mind of this reader.

Could also visualize various characters in your poem. you said it all like a silent God would say, would judge. That is why they say poets are mystics,enlightened to write what all cannot see. Heigh ho to you for giving us this deafeningly wonderful piece in this quiet place
but life is still beautiful!!

Interesting concept on silence, and here I always thought silence was golden.
