This is not a poem. I wrote it in five minutes from the state of my mind. This kind of crime is rampant and completely out of control. Thank you, my friends. A lot of you wonder if this actually happened to me... ...it did. This is reality... ...and it bites.

Poem Artwork

Break In

Cowardly parasite
You sit in your filth
You wait
You watch
You have my home as your prey
You see me leave
You smash my door
Splinters and shards of glass
Spray like wind driven snow
And you raid and ransack
Would that you took only material “things”
But no
You steal my identity
You pilfer my privacy
You rob me of precious mementos that mean nothing to you
You make me sick of living in what was my home
You are a child of chaos
And the world is birthing more of you
I feel sorry for you
Cowardly parasite

I am sorry , but rest assured this is definitely a poem full of emotions. This is what you do best. Someone had stolen my lunch from the fridge in school. I was really mad because I was pregnant with my third child and had no time to go off campus to buy because I had spent most of my lunch time grading papers. People do the darnest things! Your anger and sense of violation shines through. I am sorry that this happened to you. I have never had my bouse broken into, but once, when I went on a bicycle camping tour with my family, we woke up one morning and all of our bicycles had been stolen, leaving us about twenty miles from town and with no transportation. The thieves threw away all our camping gear, such as pots and pans, which had been stashed in the bicylce panniers. The biggest feeling I had was one of violation, that the thieves had gone through our possessions.

After reading that, I can't go to bed now! Reminds me of some similar things that happened to me in the past. The worst part is when someone takes something sentimental that cannot be replaced. People can be so heartless and strange and yet when it is done to them, I bet they cry "Foul", etc.!!! And many more cusswords. Why we have to endure violations like this is beyond my comprehension or understanding. Hope and pray that by now that the bitterness of it has healed and the pain of it has lessened and that you can feel "home" again, dear Regis. Love from Meredith Hope that the strangeness of it all has been swept away and replaced with a feeling of calm and owning your own home and space again.

Regis, I, too, have had my home broken into, and it’s one of the most horrific events that I believe will always fester until the SOB who did it, is brought to JUSTICE. I am thankful though that none of my “sentimental belongings” were found or disturb. It is such a crime against one’s very being that I believe that anyone who does such a dastardly deed should spend the rest of their contemptible life behind bars! As a matter of fact, they should be put under the darn jail! I’m truly sorry this happened to you, my friend. May peace always be with you and yours. Take good care and be well.

This has never happened to me personally in the ways you describe here, Regis, but I can understand your sense of violation and of "having been slimed" so well. And you're right... it is so not (always) about the material stuff. It is the sicko mind that seeks to seize or destroy that which makes us our own cherished being, somehow, the emotional torture that is sought to be inflicted. It's a kind of "killing" of sorts, isn't it? Bless you, dear one, and keep working it through until it has no longer the power to hurt, and you are instead empowered to almost pity those who are, instead, locked inside the minds that did this to you. THEY, for certain sure, are the prisoner, not you. You liberate YOURSELF, Regis, if ultimately you are able to find reconciliation and forgiveness out of this tawdry and heart-rending episode. YOU will emerge the victor. But I am also, of course, deeply sorry for your wounding and loss. An elderly widowed friend of my 87-yr old mother had her home broken into, excrement pasted on her walls and her drawers turned upside down until they found and posted on her pillow the death certificate of her beloved husband... we do things in style here in the UK. And this is in a small town in the sleepy West of England - God help the inner cities. I weep. Love and love and more love and hugs, dear friend. xxxxx Kate xxxxx

To make a living as a thief creates an anguish that can never be resolved by any insurance. And it seems the worse the economy is becoming, the more 'parasitic' this world become. That is why our only hope is to set our affections (biblical text) on things above, not on things that we cannot carry with us to the eternal. Our souls are the one part of us that can recover from such loss. Healing in this writing is an excellent step, not to mention an extremely gripping write Bro. Regis.

And I feel strongly that this crime should be considered terroristic, rather than robbery by breaking-and-entry - it really IS a terroristic act, and when, and if, the perp is caught they would get a much stronger sentencing.

Regis,
For a five minute write, this is extraordinary.
I've not been robbed, but Hubby forgot to lock out front door one night, and from down the road, where a party had been going on, came a drunk youth, who just walked into our house. I woke up with a start, in time to see a figure in the dark, walk in and proceed to the hallway. I woke hubby, and upon creeping around in the dark, not knowing if he was armed or not, we discovered the young guy, drunk, asleep on our daughters be. Lucky she was out sleeping over at the time. Can you imagine what would've happened had she been at home in bed? We called the cops, they came in, woke him up, he was stoned, and drunk, and didnt have a clue where he was.
I just stood there gobsmacked, and shaking.
It only takes once, to forget to lockup apparently. So in that way I share your feelings of invasion, its a no brainer for sure.
Peace and love be with you

I know this feeling far too well, Regis. I was robbed back in May and it is just now that I am finally feeling secure in my home again. I was out of control, as soon as the police left I started cleaning and putting everything back in its place as everything I owned had been tossed to the floor. I went out immediately and replaced things that I knew would remind me of what had happened, the next day I went out and bought a new television and other electronics to fill the holes I was having to see in my entertainment center. Still, there are many things that I miss and some of the things taken can never be replaced. It took me 40+ years to gather all the things that were taken. To think that things that mean so much to me would be sold for a bag of dope was crushing. I hope that you will be able to feel at home again in your house and that you will heal quickly from this horrible violation of your privacy and loss of things that had so much meaning to you. The good part is that no one was hurt and that you and your family are all right. The rest is just stuff, admittedly some are part of memories, but you are not harmed and you will find a way to move forward from this pathetic assault.
Take care,
