-A Story Appearing In A Midwest Newspaper This Weekend-
Hi, my name’s Tater. I used to live down on the Gulf Coast, right along the ocean. And, I used to love swimming in the sea. But that all very horrendously changed for me, and for thousands of other animals just like me, when Hurricane Katrina came crashing in on us four years ago on August 29, 2005.
I was so frightened that I nearly lost my mind in that storm, and now, I didn’t know where to run, or where to hide. I lost both my home and my family in that storm, and thousands of other dogs and cats very sadly lost their lives.
A few weeks after Katrina hit, some kind hearted demolition workers found me wandering all alone along the ocean, and I was now starving. They felt sorry for me, and they started throwing me some French Fries, which I really appreciated – at that point, I think I would have appreciated any kind of food at all – and they quickly named me ‘Tater.’
They also soon called a pet rescue group working down on the Gulf Coast, and they told them all about me. The very next day, another human being showed up in his old truck. He stopped near me on the beach; he opened his passenger door; and he whistled. Boy, was I every happy to see him! I jumped right in that old truck of his, and we took off together – leaving my former home behind - forever.
I quickly decided that I liked both my new human friend, and his old truck. I finally felt safe again inside that truck; and now, I began traveling all around the Gulf Coast with my new human pal, rescuing lots of other now homeless dogs and cats. Some days, we had a truck full of them, and we were both really happy now when we were able to help them out.
I actually lived in that old truck for quite awhile, until my new friend and I headed north, up to Chicago. These days, I live in the Midwest in a pretty nice house, along with a few other canine critters, and several cats, and I still love to swim!
And these days, you can usually find me splish-splashing around in my little plastic swimming pool in my new backyard, especially in these really hot Dog Days of Summer.
And when I’m not swimming in my pool, I still love riding around in that old truck with my other dog pals, and with my favorite human.
And these days, I’ve also heard my new family talking about all the dogs and cats just like me, who are now very sadly losing their homes to foreclosure.
Why not visit an animal shelter in your area, and give one of them a second chance at life? I’m really, really grateful that I got mine.
Love,
Tater
