A major talking point during the last race for America’s White House was how Americans do or do not define democracy. The words “dream,” “idea,” “republic” and “experiment” were used a lot. Such terms have long been part of the narratives that help us reinforce the best of what some call the “American character” and dismiss or disregard whatever might be the worst in the same.

Those words dominated streaming and broadcasting platforms because they are nowhere near as scary as the idea of something called an oligarchy or an autocracy becoming a reality in the United States of America. The bulldozing of the nation’s government agencies into a pile of so much historic rubble, in order to rebuild it in the image of two billionaires, is forcing many to expand their vocabularies to more accurately assess what happening as the world looks on.
