Addie and Zane are sitting at Addie’s kitchen table. The oil lamp is lit, the room is dim. Addie’s tarot cards are lying face down spread out in a cross pattern on a WOOLY SIDE UP SHEEP HIDE on the table. There is a bottle of whiskey and two tumblers sitting on the table. Zane uncaps the bottle and pours them each some color.

ZANE RYDER
I was out scoutin’ earlier today. Trouble’s comin’ to town. I reckon it’s government-sponsored oppression. The President of the United States is in collusion with Russia. Silicon Valley was wiped out by North Korea. Big oil battling Green energy. The Mormons and Catholics have different ideas about religious freedom.

ADDIE
I was witness to a hundred, maybe even more Indians today. And buffalo. It was a spiritual scene. I felt the Almighty power of a Supreme Being out there at Whisperwind today, but yet I couldn’t name it, Zane.

ZANE RYDER
Exactly. Saw ‘em myself, Addie. The Indians were well mounted and felt proud and elated because they had been made United States soldiers. The Indians are on our side for a change, and us on theirs and the buffalo. Those two-wheeled American machines are rolling across the badlands because of something they’ve heard through the grapevine.

ADDIE
Are you saying there’s a Civil War on the rise?

ZANE RYDER
Extremists, smugglers, traffickers, ponzi kings, chapo mules, assorted mafia, Syrian refugees, illegal immigrants all factions using religion and imposters as a smoke-screen. They want your town and your secret, Addie. Spies planting bugs in your moss is shameful extortion. Better batten down the greenhouse. Storm’s a comin’.

Zane turns up a tarot card lifting it off the sheepskin.

ZANE
Better keep an eye on your drink pourer. I saw Sam and him together up on the Badlands.

ADDIE

ZANE RYDER
Looked like him. Add white supremacists to the list. Thanks for the cards and whiskey, Addie. I’m gonna sneak on over to the greenhouse now and pick up that metal chest you brought in today. Your secret’s safe with me. Kin’s waitin’ for the delivery. I won’t keep ‘em waitin’. Blow out your lamp to give me cover. Shadows can get a man killed.
