It's a look into how I'm am dealing with the news that I have Celiac Disease.
About three months ago, I made a journey into yet another doctor. I figured he would tell me the same thing. That he has no idea what is wrong with me. I had been experiencing extremely painful stomach cramps. I had multiple tests all being negative. This doctor asked me several questions. One of which, have I been losing weight unexpectedly? I laughed since it was obvious that I was overweight. He sent me to get several blood tests and some 'stool' test that I hope never to have to do again in my life. One of the blood tests was to measure the 'gluten' in my blood. A few days later, my husband informed me that my doctor called. It was a Saturday. I panic. How often does a Doctor call, let alone on a Saturday? My gluten level was extrememly high. I had to go get a biopsy done on my small intestine. This procedure has an extremely long name that I cannot remember. My Doctor was pretty sure that I had Celiac Sprue. He told my husband after the procedure, that I need to go on a 'gluten-free' diet. My husband told me what the doctor had said. I was bitter. I figured since I was over-weight that it was just another way to say that was all that my problem was. I learned differently though. After much research on the internet, I learned that my body viewed gluten as poison. What depressed me the most wasn't the fact that I had to completely change the way I ate. It was the fact that I actually had a disease that normally people were unable to gain weight. Of all the nerve! Here I was dieting continously watching my husband lose 50 pounds while I loss 2. Of course, it was because my body thought that it was starving to death. Because of that fact, it stores the food like a chipmunk. Now, as I'm getting my body back to normal with my gluten-free diet, I'm gaining more weight. That is another side-effect! Oh, I forgot to mention that the whole reason that I started going to the doctor is because I started getting the horrible pains everytime I exercised. Oh well, such is life. This is my second month of being completely gluten free. I'm feeling better, I'm easier to live with and I have more energy. I know that this is the way to go. I hoping that I don't do what others with Celiac do and Gain Weight!
