The first time I saw Dolly Parton was back in 1980 when she played a sexually harassed secretary in the wonderful movie 9 to 5. While watching her on the big screen I couldn’t help thinking “wow – she’s stealing scenes from well-known stars like Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dabney Coleman!”

I simply had to write this short poem about it.

There was this country song show coming out of Wheeling, the Porter Wagoner show. While Porter and his wildly elaborate cowboy outfits and his concrete sculptured white distracting from his scarred ugly face, was in charge, Dolly, still a teenager, was clearly the star of the show that made it worth watching. Every week when they came on, she sang three of four songs. Some with him and some alone. But every week there was a hit song to hear.
