WE’RE ALL BOZOS ON THIS BUS…
The wind screeches through the tree tops outside with grim determination. Palm fronds dance with frenzy in the gusts, as if possessed by unseen wraiths. The noise of the tropical storm drowns everything in its passing fury. Even the crash of the waves seems muted against the wailing din of draughts, as the storm thunders onshore. At my feet, the dogs lie quietly except for their ears that swivel like paired and synchronized radar antennae each time the hale (house) shakes with a fresh blast.
I’ve closed off the lanai (an open patio) and retreated into the somewhat quieter interior of the hale, where it is a bit easier to compose one’s thoughts apart from the storm. There’s no one else around at the moment and I have the luxury of some time to contemplate once again this strange world we all inhabit. The wahine (woman, mate, squeeze, or SO) has gone into town to get some fresh veggies from a friend, leaving me with some rare space to think and ponder and my two ilio (dogs), who are perfectly content to lie quietly on the floor as I wring out my brain cells anew.
Out on the mainland at the moment, the entire nation seems fixated on the recent birth of octuplets to a Southern California woman who had undergone artificial fertilization, despite being unmarried and already in possession of six children. Each day a new chapter of the strange circumstances surrounding this ‘Nadya Suleman’ character unfolds, as fresh details leak out about this seriously imbalanced young woman’s obsession with having children.
As I sit here, reflecting on all the furor over Suleman’s compulsively irresponsible breeding notoriety, the hale shakes in a fresh gust and I am once more reminded of Celine’s cynically caustic observations on the human need to blindly spawn new life. At the same time, recollection of a recent news article I read crosses paths at a perpendicular angle of incidence with these thoughts about needless human irresponsibility. From past experience, I am well aware of the fact that when cognitive bisections like this occur in my life, I invariably become even more resigned about the race of creatures I seem to belong to than ever.
The salient facts about Suleman’s circumstances are by now well known to the entire nation and it is painfully clear (at least to me) to me that this young, divorced mother of fourteen children has some rather serious mental problems that should have been addressed long ago. From what I have seen of her collagen-inflated lips and facial affect on TV news clips, I deduce she appears to manifest (among her seemingly many psychological aberrances) a bizarre fixation on actress Angela Jolie and her well publicised child fosterings and adoptions. This assumption was recently borne out and verified on a 'Dr Phil' episode (don't think, please, that I watch that program regularly; I most emphatically DO NOT), during which episode it was revealed that she has attempted to contact the actress a number of times in the past (QED: A fixated wacko).
What is not as clear, however, are some facts attendant to the discovery in Russia and China of a few extremely unusual artifacts that have at first glance have absolutely nothing to do with the indiscreet and socially irresponsible breeding habits of a maladjusted young woman who now has fifteen helpless and dependent people (herself and her fourteen offspring) to feed, care for, and look after.
I refer to what are called ‘OopARTs’, the term scientists use to refer to ‘Out of place artifacts’. These are prehistoric objects, dated in many instances to ten million years BC or more, that are contextually incongruous and disassociated with any extant understandings. Specifically, several rocks have been discovered (in Russia, in China, and several other places) that contain objects that seem to be modern, technologically advanced artifacts that are totally out of synch with their geological and time origins.
In the case of the Russian object, the rock specimen was x-rayed and found to contain what looks like a metallic screw, with threads and uniform dimensions. After being examined by a number of scientific researchers, the only reasonable conclusion that can be made is that the rock contains an anomaly that simply cannot be explained. Since the age of the rock has been determined to be several millions of years old, how it could contain what looks like an artifact of advanced technology is impossible either to understand or to theorise upon. What seems to be irrefutable is the fact that the ‘screw’ is encased in solid and naturally formed rock and that it is therefore not a hoax or a fabrication.
Another ‘OopART’ was discovered a few years ago by one Zhilin Wang, a rock collector and geologist in the Mazong Mountain region of China’s interior. Wang’s rock is a strangely pear-shaped smooth black rock of unusual properties that contains (based on x-rays and an actual examination of its contents) what appears to be a screw-threaded metal bar. Again, the rock has been carbon-dated to several millions years in the past, and the mysterious artifact it contains has the appearance of a modern specimen of advanced technological hardware. Another similar object even more recently found in Russia has been examined by digital subtraction imaging and revealed to contain not just one, but eight separate threaded, screw-like artifacts.
As in the case of the Russian ‘OopART’ specimens, the Chinese artifacts have been exhaustively examined by a wide range of international experts in geology, archeology, technological sciences, chemists, and other researchers, yet none of them can offer even the most remote explanation of how such these objects ended up being encased in solid, naturally occurring solid stone of (proven) ancient origins.
Due to the fact that these objects do not fit any conventional explanation of our civilisation, recorded history, and/or geological theories of evolution, they make most researchers and theorists who are confronted by their existence quite uncomfortable, for the questions they pose are—aside from being unanswerable—disturbingly threatening to conventional knowledge and all prior assumptions about how life evolved on planet Earth.
Two possibilities that are hesitatingly discussed are so heretical to most that they seem to verge on science fiction, namely in the first instance that a highly advanced civilisation somehow existed on Earth several million years before that of mankind (as we know it), or (in the second instance) that these objects are actually from some other place in the Universe (and not from this planet). Both explanations are uncomfortable to most conventional academicians, since either threatens to jeopardise the most solidly established assumptions of the human race (the first being that we evolved entirely at random as the result of a biochemical/physical set of conditions that are unique to this solar system, and the second that we are the creation of a caring, purposeful deity).
Either explanation promises to toss any and all prior human religious beliefs entirely out the window and therefore most individuals possessed of conventional religious faith are uncomfortable to even discuss this matter, despite the fact that several of these inexplicable ‘OopARTs’ have now been uncovered in various places around the globe. In fact, in most cases, these objects have for the most part been disregarded or discounted as technological anomalies and/or geological oddities and written off as totally inexplicable, such is the intense discomfort any open speculation on their origins typically generates.
Try to imagine what the existence of these objects might do to the Christian faith and its assumption that there is a deity who sent a son to Earth to save ‘sinners’, or for that matter ANY religious faith or set of beliefs thus far produced by humanity. At best, it provides even more proof that the human race, viewed against a cosmic backdrop that embraces the entire Universe, is so abysmally ignorant and primitive in terms of its understanding, that we are actually less aware and informed about any ultimate realities that may exist than a severely retarded child at birth.
Naturally enough, this is not news to any genuinely reflective and intelligent individual who keeps an open mind with regard to life and all its infinite possibilities, but it does strongly suggest that there are many, many things we cannot even begin to grasp, despite our supremely smug concept of how ‘intelligent’ we think we are (as a race of supposedly sentient beings).
As if to underscore this fact, just this past week I was discussing this matter with an extremely intelligent colleague who has just joined our team at the office. This individual has graduate degrees in biochemistry and astrophysics and is perhaps one of the most balanced, well adjusted and insightful people I have met in recent years. After I brought the matter of these mysterious ‘OopARTs’ up, my friend casually mentioned an experience he had very recently while driving out in the middle of the California desert, on an empty and desolate stretch of roadway (near Blythe, CA).
He told me that while driving his (convertible) automobile along this road, just before dusk (the sun had just about set), he suddenly noticed to his right and about 200 yards from the roadway, a dark triangular shaped vehicle of some sort that rose up from the ground and hovered about 200 feet in the air, as he passed by. As an astute scientific person who is quite familiar with conventional aircraft and spacecraft, he stated that this ‘vehicle’ looked like no conventional air or space machine he was familiar with. Its triangular shape, dark mass, and absolute noiselessness defied any rational attempt on his part to identify it as being of Earth origin. As he watched, it stopped hovering motionlessly and angled off into the sky at a high rate of speed, disappearing quite rapidly before he had the presence of mind to record its flight on his cell-phone camera.
Understandably, a skeptic at this point would say that it must have been some sort of research aircraft he had seen that was based at Edwards, Groom lake, or China Lake flight test stations that are sited not far from there. The point remains that this individual is a genuine ‘rocket scientist’ himself and he is quite well versed in not only what already exists in terms of conventional aerospace developmental technology, but also what advanced technology seems to be ‘just over the horizon’ as well. This object did not fit into either of those two categories.
Did he see a perfectly explainable phenomenon, or was what he observed that evening yet another bit of tantalizing evidence that there are more things we do not know about the Universe than those we do? Your guess is as good or as bad as mine in this matter, but his experience would appear to be, along with the Russian and Chinese ‘OopART’ rocks, simply more pieces of a vast and mystifying cosmic jigsaw puzzle that defies any rational human understanding….yet.
As I finished the prior paragraph just now, I happened to glance up at a curious fragment of meteorite that I have sitting on the mantle, across the room from me. It is about 4 inches by three inches, smooth, black and glass like, and pocked with small pores in its surface that appear to have been caused by the intense heat of entering Earth’s atmosphere at several thousand miles an hour. It is an authentic relic from somewhere out of our world given me by a friend in NASA, and at moments like this, I cannot but glance at it and wonder for what seems like the millionth time just what is the ‘real’ reality (of life) and what is not. For my money, anyone who claims to understand the least little nuance of what human life is all about has about as much legitimacy and integrity as Wall Street schemer Bernie Maddoff. All other bets towards understanding anything at all are off for the foreseeable future, as far as I am concerned. As an ancient Greek philosopher noted, some thousands of years ago, “The more answers we obtain, the more questions are (seemingly) produced” (or words to that effect).
The hale shakes once more, as another blast of air from the storm smashes into it from the sea. At my feet, the dogs stir and glance at the doorway out onto the lanai. Unseen presences? I think briefly about all the ancient Hawaiian cultural beliefs, legends of ghosts and the 'Night Marchers', and wonder what else remains undiscovered out there beyond the doorway that might disprove and/or destroy every single fragment of ‘factual’ knowledge we poor benighted Earth creatures fancy we possess about ourselves and our true origins…
