The tyranny of the cellular phone era
and an interesting resolution (LIGHT III phone)
Many’s the time I have complained about telephones. Hard-wired or microwave cellular type, “beeper” or what have you, I hate them all.
This virulent antipathy for our contemporary principal means of intra-personal communication stems from 40+ years of enduring being joined at the hip to clinics, hospitals, ICU/CCUs, and cardiac surgery suites. Think of these electronic devices, if it helps, as electronic leashes. However, instead of giving you a nasty and unpleasant ZAP (like electronic dog leashes do), they take a far greater toll on our already stretched-to-the limit personal tolerance resources than a simple canine-type punitive device. For people like me, who have struggled with ADD (not necessarily ADHD, but with no hyperactivity component)...both in childhood (where it was never diagnosed) and in later adulthood (although some of my behavioral psychology clinician friends refer to it as “a dolt-hood”)...being constantly “available” (or distracted) by cell phones, today’s smartphones is, in my considered opinion, worse than contracting the Black Death.
Naturally, corporate America, in an unholy alliance with commercial marketers and product hucksters, regard smartphones as the next best thing since Moses brought down the 10 commandments from Mt. Sinai (AKA: Mt. Horeb, on the Sinai Peninsula), because in combination with the now almost-completely-commercialized internet, they have a dandy means of subjugating the unthinking masses of people to the whims of their vicious consumerist socialization processes (read: ‘brainwashing’). Think the 80s-era ‘Coneheads’ of SNL...consuming mass quantities.
If you occasionally tune into so-called ‘free commercial television broadcast media’ (i.e. non-pay-per-view/non-streaming/non-cable/non-satellite TV), you will note that the typical commercial advertisement aired depicts some pathetic soul grinning like an idiot at the screen of his/her smartphone and delightedly sharing whatever they’re fixated on thereupon with equally brain-dead ‘screen-gazer’ friends. The unsubtle message is simplistically clear: they want every single moment of your entire life to focus on that damned infernal smartphone device, with its endless P.T. Barnum wheedling and sucker-exhortations to buy, buy, buy...
I have a friend, for example, who is a well-known, former writer, a well-educated (MS Honors, Oxford) journalist who formerly delighted thousands of people with his brilliant and witty insights and jabs at the foibles and habits of our fellow humming beans. Today, he can’t be bothered setting words down on paper and absolutely insists that he and I stay in touch strictly via cellphone.
Since I hate cellphones with a passion that would make a (Mozart’s) Don Giovanni, a Lothario, a Casanova or a Don Juan look like repressed, bashful autistic savants with terminal shyness, I’ve even surreptitiously confiscated friends’ smartphones (provocateur-like) at parties and “accidentally” hidden them or disappeared them, such is my hatred of the bloody, noisy, irritating things.
Give a simple-minded prole a smart-phone and prepare for being an unwilling audience for endless trivia, discussed loudly in public by three-brain-cell maroons (sic, copyright Bugs Bunny)...such as the outcome (cute, eh?) of a recent trip to the toilet or the whiteness of the day’s load of laundry, or Aunt Minnie’s embarrassing laxative-induced accident yesterday, or...you get the idea.
The image that springs to my own mind is that of the delinquent Droog character, Alex, in the screen adaptation of Anthony Burgess’s classic SciFi story, A Clockwork Orange, who has been forcibly strapped down to a chair by the authorities and subjected to behavioral aversion therapy. Or perhaps the scene where he (Alex) is compelled to endlessly listen to Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, prompting him to throw himself out of a 2nd floor window in abject frustration (RIP, Alex).
It's that kind of exaggerated social torture analogue that underlies my own aversion to cellular smartphones and the drivel that they are typically used for in public. I kid you not! I think I’m a recidivist simulacrum of Alex, post Ludivico Technique therapy. Forgotten the scenes I refer to? Never read the book or viewed the film? You really must, you know.
At any rate, I think I’ve made my point here (unless commerce has degraded you into a complete, dulled-down internet drone).
Oh, I’ve had my share of cell phones and smartphones, starting with simple tone-alert beepers, progressing though the first Motorola ‘suitcase phones’, next to hand-held ‘brick phones’ of the 80s, followed by the first Motorola flip-phones, and on from there to an iPhone 10 I keep around today for its GOOGLE MAPS navigational assets when on the road. But believe me, only the fact that in today’s American culture it’s absolutely impossible to live without at least one of these electronic demons, I’d go cold turkey and settle for 1890s semaphore flag code communication.
But very recently, the excessively noisy world I exist in has been blessed by the introduction of a new, superlight and functionally BASIC cell-phone called, appropriately enough, the LIGHT PHONE. The people that developed this genius device (they’re Brooklyn natives) have now progressed through three iterations of their new and utterly basic, utilitarian Light Phone. The most recent update is called the 'Light Phone III’ and it is now being delivered to those of us who took out advanced orders for one about 8 months ago.
Rather than go on and on about the sheer brilliance of this new minimalist cell phone, I’ll print out a GOOGLE Gemini review of the phone below, since it details everything for you quite handily.
As for me, this 4”x2.75”x0.35” device fits perfectly in just about any pocket I have, whether a shirt, a jacket or in pants and the feather weight of the unit (only 124 grams) makes it a delight to carry about with me, anywhere. Best of all, there’s no internet crap, no advertisements, no martketing crap, nothing but basic telecommunication capability, tunes and a simple camera that takes excellent pictures (should you feel the need to take a selfie of yourself as you tumble off the edge of the Grand Canyon). That’s it! [They also permit texting, if you are a texting junkie.]
But read the following AI assessment. If you are like me...a neo-proto-Luddite who thinks that technology is destroying our species (but still recognise the need to make a few minimal concessions to modern necessity), you will be sending off your money for a new LIGHT III phone faster than a neutron can make a quantum jump into another dimension!
[And yes, I use AI, but I also feel that the humming beans on this planet are doomed, anyway, so neener-neener-neener! SAI (Super AI) may yet be the salvation of our otherwise lovely but sorely mistreated planet, you know...
